2014 BAOC Service Award Nominations

Nominations are closed. Attend the Willow Glen Holiday Lights and Potluck Social event to see the award presentation.

It's time to nominate a worthy recipient for the 2014 BAOC Service Award, which is given annually to a club member who has provided extraordinary service to the club and/or the sport of orienteering. Please forward to us your selected nomination(s) by November 23. Please include your reasons for your nomination. (Note: Past recipients and the sitting president are not eligible for consideration.)

Note: Please do not post your nominations on the Bay-O-Net. "Secrecy" adds to the suspense, and doesn't hurt the feelings of the nominees who are not selected, who might win in future years.

We will forward the suggested list to the past recipients for a vote to determine the final 2014 winner.

(The past recipients are Nancy Lindeman (1994), Gary Kraght (1995), Bob Cooley (1996), Ev & Jean Beuerman (1997), Joe Scarborough (1998), Evan Custer (1999), George Minarik (2000), Gavin Wyatt-Mair (2001), Penny & Harold DeMoss (2002), Robert Lewis (2003), Steve Beuerman (2004), Scott Aster (2005), Jeff Lanam (2006), Tony Pinkham (2007), Mark Blair (2008), Jay Hann (2009), Chuck Spalding (2010), Kelly Wells (2011), Rosemary Johnson (2012), and Rex Winterbottom (2013).)

The plaque will be presented at the Willow Glen BAOC annual Potluck event on Dec 13. Time is needed for the preparation of the updated plaque, so please let us know your inputs soon. Nominations will close on November 23.

Thank you for your responses.

BAOC results at 2014 N.A. Championships

The North American Championships were held near Arnprior, Ontario, west of Ottawa, Canada, during the weekend of October 11–13.

Two of our club members won North American Championships over the three days:

Gian Coolen had a great day on Saturday on the Long Course. He was second, missing the top spot by one second in M–14.

The Middle and Long courses were held at Carp Ridge. The fall colors were in full display, and the woods were very runnable. This terrain was mostly flat and very subtle. It was particularly difficult to pick out the land forms—quite a contrast from BAOC terrain. Many experienced orienteers had big errors.

The Sprint course on Monday ran through the town of Arnprior, where the downtown streets were closed for the event. The Sprints ended at the arena set in a downtown park. After the Sprint event, exciting competition was had between the U.S. and Canada elites in a relay event, with the U.S. prevailing this time.

Eleven BAOC members competed and cheered on each other. There were over 600 total competitors, with most of the top orienteers from the U.S. and Canada attending. The maps and results are here (http://www.naoc2014.ca/results-centre).

(October 14, 2014)

There were some other notable performances by BAOCers and locals as well:

News Flash: It appears that another of the runners in front of Marie-Josée might not be eligible for the North Americans, so Marie-Josée may have won a Bronze.

BAOC results at 2014 U.S. Championships

The U.S. National Orienteering Championships were held over three days, October 3–5, at Letchworth State Park, south of Rochester, NY.

On Friday, Dennis Wildfogel took the Sprint Championship Gold Medal for M65+. This is the tenth U.S. Championship for Dennis.

Erin Schirm had a great day on Saturday, capturing third place in the elite M-21+ class on the Long course.

Seven BAOC members competed in the event. The terrain was very technical when compared to BAOC terrain. The fall colors are becoming resplendent. Next weekend more club members will join us for the North American Championships near Ottawa, Ontario.

Full results are here (http://roc.us.orienteering.org/2014nationals/results.shtml).

BAOC Treasurer Position Available

The officers of the BAOC Board of Directors are up for election in April. Kelly Wells has decided not to continue as Treasurer. This is an important position, especially as we are now a California corporation and are nearing completion of our transition to a 501(c)3 organization. We are looking for someone who can keep careful financial records and prepare the annual budget. Knowledge of QuickBooks is a plus. This position doesn't take a lot of hours, and certainly doesn't require orienteering expertise. Kelly has the records in excellent shape, and I'm sure he will be more than happy to give his replacement all the help he can. Please contact myself or , chair of the Nominating Committee, if you are interested or have a candidate to suggest.

My thanks to Kelly for all of the work he has done in the position, and all the other capacities in which he has served the club.

BAOC President
(March 3, 2014)

Update: Sharon Evans graciously volunteered to fill this important position, and was elected at the AGM in April.

Steve Beuerman on 2014 U.S. Trail-O Team

Congratulations to Steve Beuerman for being selected to the 2014 U.S. Trail-O Team, which will compete at the 2014 World Trail Orienteering Championships (http://www.woc2014.info/wtoc.php) in Italy in July. The other team members are Clare Durand (LAOC) and Sharon Crawford (RMOC), who are frequent participants at BAOC A-meets.
