Note: Daylight Saving Time ends the morning of November 5th. Remember to turn your clocks back.

Quick information about the event:

GCO needs to know how many maps to print! Help them out by registering now online here (https://eventreg.orienteeringusa.org/eventregister/a40/register/start/deer-creek-hills-2023). If you can't register by Friday, but think you might attend, please send an email to organizers Jonas [] and Nik [] with the course you plan to run.
Note that online registration will close Friday, November 3, at 11 PM.
Note: This event schedule is different than for BAOC events!

More information is on the GCO website here (http://www.goldcountryorienteers.org/schedule.html).

A flier for the event is available here (190MB PDF). It shows the course details, entry fees, and more.

Feel free to share the flier with friends, hand out at work, or post anywhere you think might be appropriate.

Thanks so much for spreading the word. We hope to see you at the event!

Comments from Dennis Wildfogel, BAOC National Events Coordinator:

This 1-day National Ranking Event (NRE) is hosted by the Gold Country Orienteers (http://www.goldcountryorienteers.org) (GCO), with some assistance from BAOC. Online preregistration is available here (https://eventreg.orienteeringusa.org/eventregister/a40/register/start/deer-creek-hills-2023).
Deer Creek Hills is one of the finest orienteering venues in Northern California: gentle rolling hills with forested areas and very little nasty vegetation — and enough details to make it challenging. For specific information about this event, start on this BAOC webpage and follow the links above to GCO’s webpage and to an event flier.
Deer Creek Hills is also a special place socially, one that was saved from housing development by the Sacramento Valley Conservancy (https://sacramentovalleyconservancy.org/). It’s worth reading this short write-up (http://www.goldcountryorienteers.org/sites/dch.html) about the Conservancy’s work at Deer Creek Hills. It’s not easy to get permission to have an event there — don’t miss this opportunity!
A few things to note:
  • The initial idea was to have this special event at local-event prices. However, the fees due to the Conservancy (understandably) include a $10/person charge. As a result, the entry fee for adult preregistrants on advanced courses is $24/person — still a bargain for a National Ranking Event. You can think of the extra few dollars (compared to the fee at a BAOC local event) as a contribution to the Conservancy. Or, if that doesn’t satisfy you, think of it as a parking fee, since they are giving us free parking.
  • GCO’s schedule for starts is different from the hours that BAOC uses. In particular, the last available start is at 12 noon.
  • Daylight Saving Time ends at 2:00 AM that morning, so you have an extra hour overnight — which will help you get up early if you’re concerned about the long drive to Deer Creek Hills. (Or stay in Rancho Cordova the night before, so you can relax Sunday morning.) Whatever, just get yourself there; this will be the best O-event of the season.
See you in the woods,
... later:
GCO would like to get a better idea of how many people to expect from BAOC in order to print sufficiently many maps.
If you can register online by Thursday, Nov. 2, that would be great. If you need to wait to the last minute to pre-register, or if you prefer to register at the event, and if you think there is a reasonable chance you'll go, then please send an email to me and the GCO organizers (Jonas [] and Nik []) letting us know that you are thinking about going and which course you plan to run. It’s better to print a few extra maps than to run out of maps.
Thanks,
Dennis ()
