The weather was kind to us at BAOC's annual O' in the Oaks A-meet, this year located in the beautifully rugged Pacheco State Park. Saturday's Middle distance courses were set by François Leonard on the Eastern side of the map around the Salt Creek Canyon. This provided challenging navigation and fast running. On Sunday, Dennis Wilkinson used all of the rest of park to set the delightfully grueling U.S. Ultra Long Championship courses. The most challenging being the 18 km Blue course, which featured (at least) 950 m of climb. In addition, Erin Schirm, the OUSA juniors coach, set a fun Maze O' that was enjoyed by the juniors and adults alike.
We had a good turnout, with 169 starts on Saturday and 171 on Sunday. The 138 preregistered competitors came from far and wide: 9% (13) were international (Canada, UK, Sweden, Australia); 26% (36) were from out-of-state (Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Oregon, Washington), and 17% (24) were from California, but outside the Bay Area. Many of these orienteers took advantage of the opportunity to socialize with each other after the races at the two dinners on Saturday in Santa Nella and in Gilroy.
The long trek out to the Starts (actually longer than advertised due to a last-minute change) was worth the effort (although the change did make a lot more work for our tireless Start crew led by Chris and Graham Brew, as they slotted orienteers into new times after they missed their original slot). The Salt Creek canyon provides some unique terrain and interesting navigational challenges. François had worked hard on these courses with input from OUSA course consultant Glen Tryson (EMPO), and that led to some exciting and fast running. Unfortunately, our major blemish of the weekend was that we had mispositioned control #194, which resulted in the voiding of the Green and Blue courses, as the courses were no longer fair to all competitors—especially since we corrected the mistake half way through the event. My apologies to those who won't be able to use their courses for ranking. We learned an important lesson: ensure that we remove flagging tape when we change a control location.
Nick Barrable, visiting from England won the Blue course. Northern and Southern California battled it out on Red for the honor of being fastest man, with Matej Sebo from BAOC just edging out Will Hubsch from LAOC. Lori Huberman (CSU) was the fastest woman on that course. Mats Jannson (GCO) was the fastest man on Green, with a substantial lead, and Cornelia Coolen (BAOC) was the fastest woman. There were three finishers under 26 minutes on Brown, with Penny DeMoss (BAOC) leading the pack. The fastest man on Brown was Gary Carpenter (BAOC). BAOC youth orienteers did well on the Orange, Yellow, and White courses. Gavin Williams (BAOC) was the fastest man on Orange, and Jessica Evans was the fastest woman. Gian-Andrin Coolen (BAOC) put up a phenomenal lead as the fastest male on Yellow, and the fastest female was Johanna Karras (BAOC), who came second overall. Gian-Andrin's brother, Leander Coolen (BAOC) narrowly won White over Kristin Weber (GCO), the fastest female, just 55 seconds behind.
Despite early forecasts of rain for the Ultra Long U.S. Championship day, it never materialized and that was probably a good thing, given how far our competitors had to travel. We started with a Mass Start, which is unusual for an A-meet, but is officially allowed on an Ultra Long course. This collective start lent a real air of excitement to the proceedings, although all the shouting didn't do wonders for my vocal cords. Gavin and Davy Williams were an incredible help getting everyone organized (and subsequently they ran the timed starts with no adult interference). It was a lot of fun watching all the racers disappear off into the hills—they didn't look as chipper when they got back. Thanks to Kelly Wells, Sarah Williams, and our lifeguard volunteer, Destiny, for staffing the Aid Station, which provided much relief about two-thirds of the way through the Ultra Long advanced courses. Competitors were able to drink water, electrolyte drinks, and consume energy gels, M&Ms, and even fruit. One competitor told me that he was loath to leave to continue the rest of the race. Unfortunately the opulence and luxury of the Aid Station caused a couple of competitors for fail to punch the control. Luckily the names of all orienteers visiting the Aid Station were recorded, and I made the decision to use that list as additional proof that orienteers had visited that control (#48). Consequently, failure to punch that control was not considered a missed punch. Thanks to the genius of Dennis' design, guided again by Glen, the Finish provided an exciting vantage point, and we could watch competitors making their final leg from the Go control to the Finish, often with a final sprint. The brutal courses did claim some victims, and one of our West Point visitors was carried from the Finish with foot-sized blisters—but he did punch the Finish!
Nick Barrable finished Blue first in 2:36:13, and the U.S. Champ in the elite M-21+ class was Mikkel Conradi (CSU), finishing third on the course in 2:43:06. The fastest man on Red was Matej Sebo (BAOC), winning in 1:57:31, and he was also the M-20 U.S. Champion. The fastest woman on Red was Carol Ross (Truckee) with a time of 3:20:41, and the U.S. Champ in the elite F-21+ class was Penny DeMoss (BAOC) in 3:33:50. The fastest man on Green was Misha Kreslavsky (BAOC) in 1:29:44, and the first U.S. Champion finishing on the course was Mats Jannson (GCO) who won the M50+ class and came second overall. The fastest woman finishing Green was Cornelia Coolen (BAOC) with a time of 1:49:51, and she also won the F45+ class. Brian Ellis (GVOC) was the fastest man on Brown in 1:15:31, and the first male U.S. Champ on that course was Dennis Wildfogel (BAOC), winning M65+. Johanna Merriss (BAOC) was the fastest woman on Brown and she was also the U.S. Champ for F60+. The fastest man on Orange was Gavin Williams (BAOC) in 1:15:04, which also made him the M-16 U.S. Champ, and the fastest woman was Heidi Cusworth (BAOC). The Coolen boys (BAOC) were the fastest males on Yellow (Gian-Andrin in 32:24) and White (Leander in 26:14) and were U.S. Champs in the M-14 and M-10 classes, respectively. The fastest females on these courses were Emma Jansson (GCO, Yellow, F-14 U.S. Champ in 41:08) and Anna Campbell (COC, White, F-10 U.S. Champ in 1:21:08). The Classic Brown course, although not a U.S. Championship course, provided a compelling challenge. The fastest man and woman on this course were Michael Aked (SDO) in 1:00:40 and Olga Kraght (BAOC) in 1:20:41.
Thanks to our Epunch crew, led by Rosemary Johnson for getting us results. We didn't make it easy for them on Sunday, as 24 of the Epunch units were reading the wrong time. Thanks to the ingenuity of Valerie Meyer (QOC), we were able to piece together the WinSplits and RouteGadget data. Another lesson learned: check the clocks on the Epunch units after they are synchronized.
There were other opportunities to test our skills. Erin Schirm (CNYO) set up a Maze O' course that was frequented by youth and adults alike. Our visitors from West Point creatively filmed a competitor on this course using a camera mounted on a remote control helicopter—I must see if I can get that video and post it on this site.
On Saturday many of us socialized with our fellow orienteers at dinners in Gilroy and Santa Nella, the latter savoring the famous Pea Soup Andersons. And some of us were also lucky enough to meet up with the local residents of Pacheco State Park, including deer, bobcats, coyotes, and a tarantula.
Orienteers are truly an amazing bunch. I was really moved by the sportsmanship and tolerance of the few glitches in the event organization. In one case an orienteer argued to reinstate the result of his competitor who had failed to punch the control at the Aid Station, even though that cost him a place in the standings. So many people were also eager to volunteer and added so much to the event. I would like to call out the following folks who donated many hours of their time to this meet. François Leonard and Dennis Wilkinson were very diligent and creative course setters, and both helped me through my periodic panics. I want to thank Gary Kraght, who mentored me in A-meet organization, Glen Tryson, who did the same for the course setters, Chris and Graham Brew who managed the numerous complexities of Starts for this event and helped me to think about many of the issues I hadn't considered. Marie-Josée pulled together a fabulous Finish crew and worked hard to get the junior courses set up. Chuck Spalding kept everyone informed through the website and checked my facts. Steve Beuerman worked long and hard setting up registration and managing the consequences of my idiosyncratic decisions. Ev and Jean Beuerman made sure we had bibs and ran a seamless on-site registration. As many of you commented, the logo for the event captured the essence of the location and competition. It also made for a great T-shirt and awards design—the tiles were the source of much admiration. I want to thank Stephanie Maclean for her work in designing the perfect logo and for dealing with the logistics of ordering. Rosemary Johnson and her crew managed the always stressful Epunch effort, and Harold and Penny DeMoss ensured that all those very remote controls made it back. I would also like to thank the entire Williams family for volunteering for so many tasks and for keeping me sane. And of course this event would not have been possible without the many hours of help from Ranger Betty Wong and her lifeguard volunteer, "Destiny". Finally, I would like to thank my wife, Sarah Robson for tolerating all the time I spent on the organization, and for buying me a nice bottle of Scottish Single-Malt Whiskey to get me through the last week before the event.

Indeed ...

We also appreciate the park ranger's willingness to help by driving some of the crew out to the most distant areas of pick-up on Sunday.
