Course Setters' Notes

By Janne Peltola & Teija Lehmuskoski

Welcome to the historic Presidio of San Francisco!

This year, we offer a traditional selection of shortish courses from Beginner (White) and Advanced Beginner (Yellow) to the usual Medium (Green/Brown) and Long (Red/Blue). There's also a Sprint option for those looking for a quick dash to warm up or cool down, or just get in some Sprint action.

See you next Sunday!

Courses

   Course Length Climb Controls
   White 1.3 km 10 m 6
   Yellow 2.4 km 40 m 9
   Sprint 1.7 km 25 m 13
   Medium 3.8 km 110 m 14
   Long 6.0 km 135 m 18

Note: Beginners should be aware that the distances shown are the cumulative straight-line distances between controls. Your actual distance will be longer. The climb numbers represent the amount of ascending that would be done on the "optimum route" (in the Course Setter's opinion), without regard for any descending.

Course Character

We've tried to find what technical challenge we could from a park that's been well-trodden over the years, but the courses will still be on the easy side technically and physically. However, many of the courses take special care to get in some nice scenery!

The Sprint is more of a snack to be enjoyed with the Medium or the Long, rather than something that would stand on its own. We hope it's going to be fun, but it's still just a 10–15 minute dash in beautiful scenery! The Sprint map has some ISSOM-like characteristics, but it's definitely not a proper ISSOM map. The scale of the Sprint map is 1:5000.

Mud

It's been raining a lot in the past month or so (did you notice?), and many of the trails are muddy. You're probably better off with running shoes than Dobbs spikes (because you'll be running on pavement a lot), but make sure those running shoes can take a bit of mud.

Important

The Presidio has a lot of private property. Please make sure you keep clear of any areas that are marked out of bounds on the map. Our ability to use this park in the future could be jeopardized if you go "out of bounds"!

There are also a couple of well-trafficked roads, so please be careful when crossing.
