This fourth meet of the BAOC COOL season was held on a cool clear Saturday—perfect for Orienteering. There were 13 students attending this meet, including 3 brand new to the league.
The White course had two thirds of its climb in the first two legs, and this had its effect on at least our National Champion Julia Doubson, who made a wrong turn at control #2 for a 3-minute error. This pushed her normally first-place finish to second. Johanna Karras had a very nice run with a pace of 9:39 min/km and took first place 23 seconds ahead of Julia. Rookie Mor Davidson rocketed into third place at her first league meet, plunging right in the middle of this very competitive Elementary Girls class. This was Annie Samuelson's third time at the league and third time ever, and she continues to improve at every meet, this time earning a very respectable fourth place. Emily Hann sneaked into fifth place just ahead of Masha Konkov, which is surprising since Masha had faster leg times on every single leg except for 4-5, the long leg. This is the leg that Julia passed Emily on the course, so the competitive juices started to flow with the head-to-head encounter on the course. All the girls did well, and were all under a 15-minute pace.
For the Elementary Boys, the usual trio was a duo today, with Gavin Williams again taking the honors and keeping a fast pace, barely over the ten-minute mark. Rory Maclean continued his "I can do it by myself" attitude, electing to go cross country from the start to the first control. There was no fear of going off trail for Rory. We also were able to enjoy Rory's poster board about himself with pictures and captions from his "Student of the Week" time at school.
Course #2 was by far the most physically challenging, with its climb at eight percent far outpacing the other courses. That didn't seem to stop the Kopisch brothers, who tore up the course yet again. Daniel had the fastest legs on all the controls, except the Go control and the finish. Philipp must have been saving his strength for the end. Newcomer Niv Davidson tried his first solo course, but did not finish.
Jimmy Chung was another newcomer, and he was the only one to finish course number 3. So now Silver Creek High School is in 2nd place for the JV class.
Cameron Ferguson continues to dominate the Varsity class, and is so far uncontested for the Varsity trophy. So the most interesting thing is to compare him to the other parents/coaches who ran course #4. This course was almost unchanged from what Jim Fish set for the Southern sprint at the NOD event—thanks Jim! There were 17 controls, so you got a lot of punching out there. But it looks like there was one too many controls for Derek Maclean, who would have taken this course by over 3 minutes, except for missing the GO control. Tapio Karras took the honors, followed by our young star Cameron Ferguson. First place legs were taken by Tapio Karras (8), Derek Maclean (6), Cameron Ferguson (3), and Manfred Kopisch (3). Leg 8, the death climb, was taken by Derek Maclean.
A big thanks to all who helped with the meet!
