The Bay Area Orienteering Club and the Big Blue Adventure Race (www.bigblueadventure.com) is offering a series of Adventure Racing orienteering clinics, in conjunction with several of the orienteering events on the BAOC schedule.
- Indian Valley, Novato, May 10
- Burton Creek, North Lake Tahoe, May 25
- Morgan Territory, Livermore, June 8
- Northstar Ski Resort, Truckee, July 27
Clinics start at 10 am sharp and last for approximately 30 to 45 minutes, to be followed by an orienteering course designed for adventure racers. The cost is $12 for the first member of an AR team ($8 for BAOC members), plus $2 for each additional member, plus $2 for E-stick rental. Please come early and register before the clinic.
Clinics will include instruction in:
- Introduction to orienteering maps and the differences with USGS topo maps (including declination)
- Using the compass
- Taking a bearing
- Pace counting
- Aiming off and catching features
- Rough and fine navigation
- Relocation
- Principles of route choice
- Question and answer
In addition, your AR team can have your own individual orienteering instructor for $25 per hour. Arrangements must be made in advance, as there are a limited number of instructors. For more information, e-mail baoc
