Big Blue Adventure Series Training Event

Truckee
Sunday, July 27, 2003

Contact: Stew Hintz, 916-632-8856

Gold Country Orienteers in cooperation with BAOC and Northstar At Tahoe invites you to spend a day orienteering in the mountains above Truckee Sunday July 27. We will be offering beginning, intermediate and advaced orienteering courses in addition to an adventure racing clinc and special adventure racing course.

Registration opens at 9:30 a.m. in the lower village parking lot at Northstar and will remain open until Noon. Courses will open at 10 a.m. and close at 2 p.m. The advanced and intermediate starts will close at 12:30 p.m. GCO charges $5 per course and $2 for each additional map.

Advanced and intermediate courses will be started up the mountain so come early to ensure you make the cutoff for your starts. Northstar offers a "hikers lift pass" on the lower chair lift for $5. If you choose to walk to the starts they are a mere 3 Km away with about 300 meters of climb. A downhill mountain bike race is also being held on Sunday and while the orienteering courses should stay away from the racers, the climb to the starts will probably share some trails with them. TAKE THE LIFT.

Course setters notes will be forthcoming in a few days, but in case you have never been to Northstar to orienteer or possibly forgot the fun you had three years ago here are a few enticements to come up into the mountains and play:

  • We may not have epunch, but we will have pre printed maps (a rare event for GCO)
  • No Poison Oak
  • Breath taking views of the Martis Creek area (actually walking up to the registration table will be breath taking for some)
  • The 1:10,000 map is a stunning example of map maker George Kirkov's whimsy and humor
  • The Truckee bypass is now open and you no longer have to tempt death as you cross the train tracks in town
  • Where else can you ride a ski lift to the starts

We hope you can come out and enjoy the mountains and any help with starts or finishes would be greatly appreciated.

Directions

From all points East and West take Interstate 80 to Exit 188B (Highway 267) just east of Truckee. Take Highway 267 in the direction of Kings Beach for about 5.5 miles. Northstar will be on your right (follow the orienteering signs from here)
