Note: The official source of event information is the Tahoe 2021 Bulletin (4MB PDF) (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1d0rP-H2-Id6Ji6MMe2s1o11KLHjmtzqc/view).
(That is, the Bulletin takes precedence if there's a difference from this website.)

While the Tahoe 2021 event includes world-class courses and championship races, you can also come to do a recreational course on most of the event days. Beginners are welcome, and there will be free instruction to get you started.

Please take careful note of the hours listed below. These events do not follow the schedule of our club’s usual orienteering events, and the hours are different every day.

Please register online if possible! That way you can skip the line, get the paperwork out of the way ahead of time, and increase your COVID safety. Click here (https://eventreg.orienteeringusa.org/eventregister/a40/register/start/tahoe2021latereg) to register online.

If necessary, you can register at each event during the hours listed below. At an event, you can pay with cash, check, or credit/debit card.

For each event you (or your group, if multiple people are going on the course together) will need an E-punch finger stick. You can arrange to rent one during online registration, or you can rent one at the event.

All the information about the events can be found in the Tahoe 2021 Bulletin (4MB PDF) (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1d0rP-H2-Id6Ji6MMe2s1o11KLHjmtzqc/view).

Note: The Bulletin has evolved as late information became available. The links on this website always reach the latest edition. There is a list of changes on the last page, with the most recent change at the top.

What to Bring

For beginners, comfortable outdoors attire is fine. Running or walking shoes are fine for the Sprint event; you should wear sturdy running or hiking shoes for the Middle and Long events.

A compass is not necessary, but can be helpful. We have compasses available for a $1 rental fee.

We time the courses with the SPORTident system, so each entry/team needs to have a SPORTident fingerstick. If you don't have your own, you can rent one during online registration or at the event for $5 per event. (Use of the "E-punch" system is easy. You can learn how at the event, or read about it here.)

Note: Rogaine registration includes a loaner fingerstick for that event.

Events

You can see general information about Sprint, Middle, and Long events in our FAQ here.

The Sprint, Middle, and Long events have point-to-point courses, which means you must visit all the controls in the prescribed order. The results are based on the time taken to complete the course. There will be five different courses at each of those events, ranging from Beginner (White and Yellow), to Intermediate (Orange), to Advanced (Brown and Green). A general description of the “color” courses is here; the details of the courses at each event are included below.

The 4-hour Rogaine event is a Score-O course, which means you have a fixed amount of time (4 hours) to visit as many of the controls as you want in any order. The results are based on points scored by visiting the controls, with each control having a specified point value. There is a points penalty for being overtime.

You can see more detailed information about each of the events in the Course Setters’ Notes, which are available in the Tahoe 2021 Bulletin (4MB PDF) (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1d0rP-H2-Id6Ji6MMe2s1o11KLHjmtzqc/view) (beginning on page 15 in the July 29 edition).

Driving directions for all the events are provided in the Tahoe 2021 Bulletin (4MB PDF) (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1d0rP-H2-Id6Ji6MMe2s1o11KLHjmtzqc/view) (on page 7 in the July 29 edition).

The following provides information about the individual events.

Friday, August 6: Sprint event at Sierra College in Rocklin, CA

Parking at Sierra College is at 38.7890,-121.2126. You are required to park in the area designated for Orienteering Parking. Signs will direct you to this area from the East Campus Entrance on Rocklin Rd.

This is near Sacramento, not in the Truckee area. It is an 80-mile drive from Truckee. To beat the Sacramento Valley heat, we are doing everything early (and quickly):

You will then have an hour to relax, watch the competition, and warm up.

Recreational participants must all report to the Start area at 10:30, when recreational starts will begin. We will start everyone as quickly as possible, so please be prompt and attentive.

You have one hour to complete the course. Please return to the Finish within one hour, whether you finished the course or not. Make sure to download your data at the Finish, so that we’ll know you have returned and we won’t have to search for you.

Here are the Sprint course details:

    Course Length Climb Map Scale
    White 1.05 km 15 m 1:3000
    Yellow 1.29 km 20 m 1:3000
    Orange 1.73 km 25 m 1:3000
    Brown 1.66 km 25 m 1:3000
    Green 2.28 km 35 m 1:3000

For the Sprint courses, the stated length is the actual length of the optimum route (i.e., around obstacles). As for all orienteering courses, the climb is the total ascending that would be done along the optimum route, without regard for any descending.

Note: Sprint courses have “uncrossable” features shown on the map. Those are features that you are not permitted to cross regardless of how easy it might be to physically cross them. This PDF file (752MB) (https://orienteering.asn.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/OA-Map-Symbols-ISSOM-Aust-Ed-April-2014.pdf) shows all the map symbols used on Sprint maps, with the “uncrossable” features highlighted.

Satuday, August 7: Middle event at Little Truckee Summit

The Little Truckee Summit parking lot is next to Highway 89 (at 39.5048,-120.2832), 14.6 miles north of the intersection with Interstate 80.

You can start your course any time between 10:00 AM and noon.

You have two hours to complete the course. Please return to the Finish within two hours, whether you finished the course or not. Make sure to download your data at the Finish, so that we’ll know you have returned and we won’t have to search for you.

Here are the Middle course details:

    Course Length Climb Map Scale
    White 1.7 km 35 m 1:7500
    Yellow 2.2 km 40 m 1:7500
    Orange 2.5 km 90 m 1:7500
    Brown 2.1 km 60 m 1:7500
    Green 3.4 km 135 m 1:7500

For the Middle courses, the stated length is along the straight lines between controls, so the actual distance you will cover will very likely be longer. As for all orienteering courses, the climb is the total ascending that would be done along the optimum route, without regard for any descending.

Sunday, August 8: Long event at Sagehen

For this event, you must park at the Little Truckee Summit parking lot (39.5048,-120.2832) and take a shuttle to the event. You will pass the event location (39.4464,-120.2144) on your way to the parking lot. Please drop off passangers at the event so only the driver will need to take the shuttle.

You can start your course any time between 9:30 AM and noon.

You have three hours to complete the course. Please return to the Finish within three hours, whether you finished the course or not. Make sure to download your data at the Finish, so that we’ll know you have returned and we won’t have to search for you.

Here are the Long course details:

    Course Length Climb Map Scale
    White 2.5 km 60 m 1:7500
    Yellow 2.8 km 80 m 1:7500
    Orange 4.8 km 145 m 1:10000
    Brown 4.6 km 125 m 1:7500
    Green 5.7 km 170 m 1:10000

For the Long courses, the stated length is along the straight lines between controls, so the actual distance you will cover will very likely be longer. As for all orienteering courses, the climb is the total ascending that would be done along the optimum route, without regard for any descending.

Saturday, August 14: 4-hour Rogaine event at Northstar Resort

Registration is in parking lot F at Northstar Resort (39.2794,-120.1226).

You have four hours to complete the course without an overtime points penalty. Please return to the Finish by 6:30 PM. Make sure to download your data at the Finish, so that we’ll know you have returned and we won’t have to search for you.

Please note that there is a list of compulsory gear in the Tahoe 2021 Bulletin (4MB PDF) (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1d0rP-H2-Id6Ji6MMe2s1o11KLHjmtzqc/view) (on page 31 in the July 29 edition).
