Help take care of the parks where you love to orienteer!

The BAOC Board recently decided to participate in one or more volunteer projects with the local parks where we hold our events. In addition to an opportunity to "give something back", this will enable us to strengthen our relationships with these parks.

We have decided to participate in a scheduled event at Almaden Quicksilver Park (http://www.sccgov.org/sites/parks/Ride%20Here/Pages/Almaden-Quicksilver-County-Park.aspx) (AQ) south of San Jose, near Calero. AQ is part of the Santa Clara County Parks. BAOC holds an event there every few years, in addition to our annual events at Calero, Joe Grant, and Vasona, all of which are also Santa Clara County Parks.

The Park Department's description of the project is below. Please note that pre-registration is required for this event. BAOC member will be coordinating BAOC's participation. Please contact for additional information, and let him know if you are interested in participating. (There's no need to also register with the Park Department.)

Driving Directions

From Highway 85 in south San Jose, take exit 6 toward Almaden Expressway. Turn left onto Almaden Plaza Way and then take the first right onto Almaden Expressway. After 4.2 mi (where Almaden Expy bends to the left), turn right onto Almaden Rd. After 0.6 mi, turn right onto Mockingbird Hill Ln. The parking lot will be on your left after 0.4 mi.

Note: The event will not originate at the parking lot we normally use for orienteering events. Here's a map showing the meeting place for the volunteer event, and our normal parking lot for reference.

National Trails Day at Almaden Quicksilver Park (http://www.sccgov.org/sites/parks/Ride%20Here/Pages/Almaden-Quicksilver-County-Park.aspx)

Saturday, June 2 — 9 AM – 1 PM

Volunteers maintaining a trail

Come help our expert County Parks Trail Crew with new trail construction, tread work, and brushing. You'll work along some of the most beautiful and pristine trails in Santa Clara Valley and you will also learn the art and science of professional trail work.

June 5 celebrates the American Hiking Society's National Trails Day. We will work on the New Almaden Trail. Volunteers meet at the Mockingbird Lane parking lot. Pre-registration is mandatory.

No special skills are required but the work may be moderately strenuous. Tools, work gloves, and snacks are provided; please bring your own water bottle (we can refill your bottle, but to eliminate waste we no longer provide individual-size bottled water). Sturdy hiking shoes, long pants and long sleeve shirt, and sun or rain protection are highly recommended.

Volunteers age 14–15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian throughout the event. Volunteers age 16–17 may participate without parent/guardian supervision, but only if they present a completed volunteer application including a parent or guardian's signature. Application forms as available at the event, but the parent or guardian must be present to sign.
