Course Setter's Notes

Welcome to Coyote Hills Regional Park!

Today’s courses include:

  Course Distance Climb Controls Comments
  White 2.3 km 20 m 11 Beginner
  Yellow 3.1 km 90 m 10 Adv. Beginner
  Orange 4.2 km 105 m 14 Intermediate

The White course is entirely on trails. The course crosses the main park road at a crosswalk. Use caution when crossing the road.

Yellow has some controls located a distance of 50-100 m off-trail. Long pants are recommended.

The Orange course has controls located off-trail. Tall grass may make for slippery travel between controls. Long pants and sturdy shoes with cleats are recommended. The special item "X" has been used on the control description sheet to indicate a gate located in a marsh channel.

Water will be available on all courses except White. The White course passes by a picnic area with drinking fountains. You may also want to carry water with you.

If you have not participated before, we recommend that you try a beginner course first. Then you can do a more advanced course if you want more. All courses close at 2 PM. Please be sure to check in at the Finish by 2 PM whether or not you have finished the course.

The courses are premarked on the maps. The map scale is 1:10,000 with 5 m contours, except for White, which is printed at a scale of 1:7,500. The indicated distance is measured as a straight line between controls. Your actual distance will most likely be longer. Minor updates were made to the map in the vicinity of some controls, however some vegetation features have changed since the map was created, so the boundaries may no longer be accurate. There have also been some man-made changes at the park. In particular, several park benches are unmapped and several power poles have been removed. All courses have some climb involved, and provide great views of the Bay Area. Pin punching is used for all courses.

Beginner clinics will be held in the morning as needed. Check with registration crew to determine when the next clinic will start.

There is some poison oak in the park. Use caution when proceeding in areas on the map shaded in green (vegetation feature). Wash affected skin with Tecnu and water after completing your course(s).

There are several out-of-bounds areas marked on the map. The courses have been routed so that you should not pass through these areas.
