What is spinning on top of the igloo? What is written on the abominable snowman's head? What color is the star in the monster's hand?
What fun it was to be running or walking around the Willow Glen neighborhood on a cool night, looking for the answers to these and other questions at the "controls" that were all at decorated houses. What a beautiful neighborhood!
We were really lucky to have a clear night between two storms for our event.
People started arriving at the Willow Glen Elementary School cafeteria right at 5:00. The custodian arrived, but didn't have the keys to open the multi-use room or bathrooms, so we had to wait until someone came out to give him the right keys. Once we got in, many people helped us to get everything set up, and we were ready for the 6:00 start. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to help us set up registration, the potluck, and Peter's Water Play station.
It was good to see that about 115 participants did show up to go out on the course on a wonderful December night. We had many scouts and families show up this year. The kids had a good time on the course, and enjoyed the hot chocolate and hot cider when they finished.
Father/son team D&D Wilkinson came in first in the 60-minute division, and Marcy Beard was first in the 90-minute division.
Peter Graube had a big crowd to listen to his interesting Water Play presentation.
Congratulations to Trinka Gillis, this year's BAOC Service Award winner. Thanks, Trinka, for all you have done to help the club!
Thanks for making this event possible go to:
- Tony Pinkham and Brad Wetmore, the course setters, for all their hard work on this event.
- Tony Pinkham for being in charge of the starts and finishes, and for greeting everyone when they finished their course.
- Steve Haas for handling registration.
- Bob Cooley for printing the maps. (Thanks for printing the extra maps, Bob, when we found out how many groups would be joining us.)
- Rex Winterbottom, our Event Coordinator, who helped get this event on the schedule.
- Chuck Spalding for being so helpful in updating the webpage for the event.
- Jeff Lanam for presenting the BAOC Service Award.

And thanks to everyone for coming on a cool night to our annual Willow Glen Holiday Lights event. Many of you said that you had a great time. Tony said that several people loved the event and plan to come back next year and bring their friends. We hope to see you next year.

Attendance: 115 participants for an evening-only event that has attracted 30 to 55 people in the previous years at this location.
Following the event, one of the course setters checked the controls for which competitors gave the wrong answers, and found only one control "set in error" (the decoration used in the question for control 11 had been removed, so Steve Gregg got credit as the only person to visit that control). Mistakes made with controls 53 and 54 were for what amounted to probably seeing another decorated house two or five properties further down the street—both the mistaken home and the correct home had easily visible addresses, so we let the penalties stand for each person who provided the wrong answers. The other wrong answers were mostly cases in which the competitor provided two answers when only one was allowed, or for clearly providing a wrong answer.
