Nice weather, fun courses from a first-time course-setter, good turnout, lots of volunteers—what’s not to like! Especially if you ignore an early computer problem (which the e-punch team addressed in plenty of time), a couple of minor issues with map supply, and lots of stickers in people’s shoes and socks afterwards.
About 115 people turned up early Sunday (we must have had 30–40 people start before 10 AM, when the starts were supposed to begin). Don’t know whether the fact that it was Fathers’ Day helped or hurt, maybe a little of both.
Phillip Hoare did a fine job in his first effort at course setting, creating six courses that took people all over the park. I heard lots of positive feedback afterwards. There were a couple of minor complaints, but that seems to be standard for all of our events.
Wolf Rodemich finished first on White by a huge margin, while Paul Berenberg easily won Yellow. Yesterday’s star in the Šebo family was Daniel, who finished first on Orange. Brown had the closest finish, with Lauren Knight finishing 44 seconds ahead of Krists Krilovs. Werner Haag won Green, and François Léonard turned in an awesome performance to take Red, covering the 8.4 km course in 41:38.
Yellow proved to be the most popular course, as well as the only one where I underestimated the number of maps we needed. (We adapted by asking a few finishers to return their maps for re-use.) It looked like we also ran out of Brown maps, but that turned out to be due to one competitor inadvertently taking four copies of the map. (One late runner was forced to choose between Orange and Green instead of his preferred Brown.)
Lots of volunteers helped with everything at the event. They included Ev and Jean Beuerman, Matthias Kohler, Chuck Spalding, Nancy Lindeman, Peter Graube, Dan Greene, Gary and Olga Kraght, Jeff Lanam, Rosemary Johnson, Steve Gregg, François Léonard, Marie-Josée Parayre (and friend), Fyodor Konkov, and probably one or two more that I’ve forgotten. Other than a little unfounded worrying about having enough people for control pick-up, getting more than enough volunteers was easy. Thanks to all of them.
