This fifth meet of the BAOC COOL season was held on a cold rainy Saturday—"perfect" for Orienteering. There were 8 students attending this meet, including 1 brand new to the league.
The big news is that there is now some competition for the Varsity Perpetual Trophy! Kelsey Wyatt-Mair, a member of the first-place JV team at last year's Interscholastic National Championships, ran Course 4 for her first meet of the season. If she continues to run in the last three meets, she'll have tied up the Varsity competition at 400 points each, as each team gets to count the best four meets. So the big question is "Will either school come up with another runner who can complete a Course 4, and therefore break the tie?"
Course 1 was a bit of a challenge. Everyone found the best route choice on leg 2–3 and got to follow a scenic trail, with the left side of the trail dropping off precipitously, followed by almost a disappearance of the trail. Most avoided the cross-country opportunity, which was probably the best choice. But Rory Maclean wouldn't let that kind of opportunity pass, and ended up "making my own avalanche" when he slid down the steep muddy bank. Those who ran on Saturday got to experience lots of rain, some hail, and thunder and lightning. They also earned Puddle Duck Honors, which they will see on their next certificate.
The Pelayo sisters, et al, joined us for their second meet, and they took home a bunch of points for Laurel-Encinal, rocketing it from 8th to 2nd place. Hannah Kopisch brought in the first place for 100 points. Cassandra Pelayo and Natalie Pelayo brought in second and third places for 87 and 69.2 points, respectively. Emily Hann and Elisabeth Pelayo took fourth and fifth places.
In the Elementary boys class, Gavin Williams and Rory Maclean ran again in this tough weather. This time Rory was closing the gap to first-place Gavin, earning a personal best of 85.3 points.
There were no runners on Course 2 or Course 3.
A big thanks to all who helped with this meet!
