Morgan Territory Regional Preserve

Date: (Sun.) Jan. 12, 2014
Location: Livermore, CA
Event Director: - 510.525.1574
Course Setter: Misha Kreslavsky
Type: B; Kick off the New Year with a 7-course event in great terrain. Beginner instruction & courses offered.

Please note that fees and time limits apply. Events are typically not canceled due to bad weather.

We begin the new year by orienteering in the beautiful rolling hills and meadows of Morgan Territory. The weather should be dry and the temperature could reach 60. The full menu of seven standard courses will include a course suitable for everyone's ability and fitness.

We Love Beginners!

If this is your first try at Orienteering, feel free to call or email the to discuss how to make the experience more enjoyable for you. Drop in on our free, repeating beginner's clinics starting at 9:30 am.

Schedule

The standard event fees will apply.
You may print and fill out an entry form (38KB/PDF) (http://baoc.org/pdfs/entry_form.pdf) in advance if you wish (which may save time if you are bringing a large group). Complete one form for each group of people going on a course together.
These short, repeating introductions to orienteering provide enough information to complete a beginner (White) course.
Everyone must check in at the Start to be assigned a start time, so participants are spaced out (at least at the Start).
Everyone must report to the Finish by then even if you haven't completed your course.

Group Preregistration

For groups of 5 or more, please email the with the number in the group and the course color(s) that will be run. (If the group will split up onto different courses, please tell us how many will be on each course.) This is to ensure we have ample maps.

Starts will be a 500-meter or 10-minute walk from the registration/parking area. The Finish is adjacent to the registration/parking area.

Be sure to read the Course Setter's Notes for more information.

Volunteers

Like all BAOC events, this event cannot take place without the help of many volunteers. We have divided many of the volunteer opportunities into small portions, so most people can also run a course. Please choose one of the positions below. None of these involve more than an hour or so of help, and require a minimum of instruction. Send an email and perform a valuable service for the club.

Carpooling (Modified Jan. 9)

We will not have access to the overflow lot at Morgan Territory. Earlier we said that only cars with 2 or more people could park in the lot. We have modified this. Although it is necessary that most people come in a carpool, single-driver vehicles will be allowed to park in the lot. (There is no parking allowed on Morgan Territory Road and there are no other nearby parking areas.) If everyone follows these carpool guidelines, we should have no problem accommodating all the cars. Previously we had said we would have a carpool coordinator, but this did not materialize. So we are counting on the participants to arrange their own carpools.

To make the carpooling process as easy as possible, there are several ways to find/form a carpool:

  1. Ask your fellow club members if you can hitch a ride with them.
  2. Post a message on the BayONet or the club Facebook page to find riders or drivers.
  3. Recruit a friend or family member to come along with you, and to experience their first orienteering course.

You can arrange to be picked up at the BART Dublin/Pleasanton Station. Trains arrive there as early as 9:11 AM on the day of the event.

Also, see the Carpool Sites section below.

Electronic Punching

Electronic punching (EP) will be used on all courses. If you do not own your own EP card (finger stick), you may rent one at the event. Participants who have never used EP before might want to look at our User's Guide to Electronic Punching.

It will be important to remember to download your EP card at the EP tent near registration before you go home. Otherwise, we will not know that you have returned, and may have to start a search party for you after the courses close.

Driving Directions

Morgan Territory Regional Preserve
9401 Morgan Territory Rd
Livermore, CA 94551

Please see the carpooling comments above.

From the West & South: From I-580 E, take the N Livermore Ave exit. Turn left onto N Livermore Ave. In 3.6 mi you'll make a forced left onto Manning Rd. Take the next right (0.5 mi) onto Morgan Territory Rd and continue 5.5 mi (up the narrow mountain road) to the parking lot on the right.

From the North: From I-680, take the Willow Pass Rd exit toward Taylor Blvd. Turn left onto Willow Pass Rd. In 1.4 mi turn right onto Galindo St. Turn left at the second cross street onto Clayton Rd. Stay on Clayton Rd 7.0 mi, then continue onto Marsh Creek Rd. In 3.4 mi turn right onto Morgan Territory Rd and continue 9.2 mi (up the narrow mountain road) to the parking lot on the left.

There's a map here that shows the location of the event.

Public Transit

Arrange to be picked up at the Dublin/Pleasanton BART Station (https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=37.700936,-121.897538&spn=0.003476,0.005777&sll=37.700999,-121.896899&sspn=0.003519,0.005654&mrsp=0&sz=18&t=m&z=18) (17 miles from the event).

Carpool Sites

Carpooling is encouraged. The Dublin/Pleasanton BART Station is a great place to pick up passengers for the ride up the mountain.

Another place to meet for a prearranged carpool is the Walmart parking lot (https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=37.700036,-121.768405&spn=0.013905,0.02311&sll=37.699985,-121.768684&sspn=0.013905,0.02311&t=m&fll=37.698321,-121.766539&fspn=0.013905,0.02311&z=16) (10 miles from the event). Just off I-680, turn right at the North Livermore Ave Exit. Carpooling from a location that close to the event might not seem useful, but there are two benefits: one or more cars would avoid the drive up the narrow, twisty road, and more parking space would be available at the event site.
