Emerald Hills Scramble

Date: (Sat.) Feb. 9, 2013
Location: Redwood City, CA
Event Director: - 857.361.8984
Course Setter: Frank Markowitz
Type: C; White (beginner) and Score-O courses in the Emerald Hills neighborhood and Edgewood Park

Please note that fees and time limits apply, unless otherwise mentioned below. Events are typically not canceled due to bad weather.

After a long absence, we return to this popular venue for an urban (street) event. Join us for a Street-O Adventure starting at Roy Cloud Elementary School in the hills above Redwood City. You'll enjoy the crooked streets and terrific views. We will have a standard, easy White course for families and beginners, and a slightly more-advanced Score-O course for others. Yes, the courses will go into nearby beautiful Edgewood Park — photos and a plant/wildflower search are available here (http://www.friendsofedgewood.org).

Come out and join in the fun and enjoy a winter day with us for a mix of urban with the wild at the Emerald Hills Scramble event. Please invite your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers, as this is a good event for newcomers. Please let your friends that have scouts know about this event.

This is a good event for beginners, and short beginner's clinics will be offered on request between 9:30 and 10:30 to give you enough information to be able to complete the White course or the Score-O course.

Groups of 8 or more, adventure race navigation training groups, outdoor adventure groups, scouts, home school groups, school groups, JROTC, etc., please let us know at least a week in advance so that we'll have enough maps printed.

The Adventure White course is for families and beginners — especially for youth under 10. It will be a good course for younger scout or school groups. This will be lots of fun for the less-competitive folks who will enjoy the views, the variety of houses from mansions to old cabins, interesting gardens, and of course the terrain in Edgewood Park.

For the Scramble (Score-O)  there will be about 32 controls in the Emerald Hills neighborhood, Edgewood Park, and the Canada College campus, and you will need to visit controls and return to the finish in either 60 or 90 minutes. (There are more controls than even Dennis, Jason, or Rex can get in the time allowed, so everyone will have to decide which controls to leave out.) You can decide on your time category while you are out on the course. This will be the course that most people will choose. Older scout or school groups and adult beginners that feel comfortable reading a street map will probably want to choose the challenge of this Street-O Adventure course.

Frank Markowitz has put together a challenging Score-O course, and we're hoping for a big turn-out. We've printed lots of maps, so we'll be ready for a crowd!

Be sure to read the Course Setter's Notes for more information about the courses.

Schedule

The White course will be open starting at 10:00 for starts any time from 10:00 to 11:55.

For the Score-O, we will start to pass out the maps for course planning at 9:30, have pre-race instructions at 9:50, and the mass start for the Scramble on the Streets will be at 9:55. You can also have an individual start on the Score-O course until 11:55.

Everyone must be back by 1:00 PM. We'll have hot cider, tea, and hot chocolate, plus some snacks, in the multi-use room waiting for you when you finish your course.

Pre-registration

Although it's not required, we request that you pre-register for the event so we can make sure we print enough maps (also so we can know who might be available to help at the event ). You can pre-register with this form (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?fromEmail=true&formkey=dE5JbGZjV1FSaHgzV2dWaG10QUNDVkE6MA).

Request for Volunteers

This event requires less than most in terms of volunteer help, but we could use a couple of people to help with starts and finishes (no experience required).

With the large number of newcomers expected, we really need someone experienced to do beginner's clinics.
