After spending Wednesday and Thursday introducing orienteering to 1,009 middle-school students at Charlotte Wood Middle School in Danville, Jay Hann is going to follow up with a small event at Osage Park, right next to the school. He is hoping to reinforce orienteering for those kids at the school who have an interest.

There will be a Mini-O and a variety of short courses. The park is small, but if you feel like stretching your legs and/or giving Jay a hand, come on out!

Schedule

9:00 AM – 12:00 noon: Registration
9:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Starts for all courses
2:00 PM: Courses close — you must be back even if you don't finish your course

Punching

We will be using electronic punching at this event, using SPORTident finger sticks. The following models are supported: SI-Card 5, SI-Card 6, SI-Card 8, and SI-Card 9. Finger sticks are available for loan/rent at the event.

Registration

Fees:

Charlotte Wood students: $ 2 (includes finger stick rental)
People under 21: $ 5 (includes finger stick rental)

Compasses are available for rent ($1), but should not be needed in this urban area.

At this event, your fee covers running again on other courses, as many as you'd like. The additional course results will not be published, and you will need to return your map. You may keep the map from your first course.

Course Setter's Notes

By

The park will be dominated by soccer games on Saturday. The Mustang Soccer League, covering Danville and Alamo, is massive, with 4,500 youth participating each year. In addition, there is a soccer camp put on by the Town of Danville in the field next to the tennis courts.

You should never run on one of these fields, even between games. The courses were designed to completely avoid these fields, so you shouldn't see any advantage to running on them.

If you haven't yet tried one of these small-area courses (Course 1, 2, or 3), you will want to do so, at least as a second course. The operational intensity of these courses has to be experienced to be believed, as you have to make navigational decisions every few seconds.

Restrooms are not at the meeting place, but out in the park. The nearest restroom is near the tennis courts, just across the first small field.

The Map

This is a new map created by Rex Winterbottom (thanks, Rex!). It is mapped to the ISSOM standard at 1:5000. The course maps are at a larger scale. There is still some work to be done on this map, but the area surrounding each control site is sufficient for accurate navigation.

The 1:1000 course maps have every tree mapped individually as a green circle.

The Courses

Here are the final course statistics:
