Enjoy the Tahoe Three-Day event on the North Shore of sparkling Lake Tahoe on September 10, 11, 12. Mark your calendars and make your reservations.
The weather should be perfect for a sprint-series event at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort on Friday afternoon near Truckee, followed by two days of classic orienteering Saturday and Sunday at Burton Creek State Park in Tahoe City. No Poison Oak. Reasonable climb. Pure pleasure.
Donatas Ereminas will be setting the Sprint course, while Greg Walker will be setting courses in the complex terrain the club used for our A-meet in 2008. The redoubtable directing team of Rosemary and Roos (aka Johnson and Joan) will organize the occasion. Nancy Lindeman has arranged group camping at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park. Come join us for our annual adventure in the mountains.
Please Pre-register
Please pre-register if you think you will be attending. It would really help the organizers to get a sense of how many people will be attending and how many maps we will need for each course. This link (http://wayoutyonder.com/BAOCPreRegister.php) (or the Pre-register for E-Punch link on the left-hand side of any page) will take you to a page where you can select each event.
Pre-registration is not binding — it just indicates that you expect to participate.
Here's a note about how the pre-registration page is set up:
- If you select an event and click on the Register For This Event button, the next thing you see is "Thank you for pre-registering ...". If you don't read any further you might think you're done, but not so fast. Scroll down and enter your name, e-stick number (if any), and course preference. Then click on the Register button. Now you are really done.
The current list of registered entrants for each event is available on the registration Web site (http://wayoutyonder.com/BAOCPreRegister.php). So you can decide which course to run based on where your nemesis or friend is, or is not, running!
Schedule
Friday, September 10th, will feature a sprint by course setter Donatas Eriminas at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort. Registration will open at 3:30 PM, and starts will be from 4:00–5:30. Courses close at 6:00 PM — everyone must check in at the Finish by then, even if they have not completed their course.
The Burton Creek events on Saturday and Sunday will be staged out of the Highlands Community Center (925 Country Club Drive, Tahoe City, CA) for courses set by Greg Walker. Registration will be open from 9:30 AM to noon (note the later-than-usual registration start, which is due to rental of the center). Course closure is at 2 PM on Saturday, and at 1 PM on Sunday.
Special Offers
There will be a bring-a-friend-to-try-out-orienteering free offer at all the Tahoe events. BAOC members can introduce a friend (or two) to orienteering, and the friend(s) can run for free. At registration, the friend will fill out the normal form and just say "I'm a friend of _________." (The member is not required to accompany the friend on their course.)
Northstar-at-Tahoe offers a discount off their normal lodging rates for orienteers who stay there on the Sept. 10–11 weekend. As of Aug. 27, all the Northstar hotel rooms are booked for the Sept. 10–11 weekend, but there might be some condos still available. Contact for the code you will need to enter in your on-line reservation. (This discount is only for on-line registration on the Northstar Web site for lodging. The discount does not apply to BAOC course registration.)
Courses
Sprint and White/Yellow courses will be offered on Friday, Sept. 10, at Northstar. The map has been converted to 1:4000 ISSOM (International Specification for Sprint Orienteering Maps) for this event.
Note: The ISSOM standard includes map symbols that indicate features that are forbidden to be crossed, regardless of whether or not you might be physically able to cross. There will be a sheet at registration that shows the various map symbols. Please obey the rules — do not cross "forbidden features".
The typical seven courses will be offered on Saturday and Sunday, only the format will differ — long courses on Saturday and medium length on Sunday. The Long Orange courses have been added.
Final course statistics are below for all three days.

Camping
(Organized by )
Our first group campsite for 40 people and 10 vehicles is already filled, so I made reservations for another group site at Sugar Pine Point State Park (10 miles south of Tahoe City on Highway 89 — 33 min and 14.4 miles from Burton Creek) for Friday and Saturday nights, Sept. 10 and 11.
We now have 10 sites that are together, and can have 80 people and 20 cars. It's a large group site, and there's lots of room to put up your tents. The campground has flush toilets and coin-operated showers. It has overflow parking for extra cars.
The swimming/beach area is in the park, but across the highway from the campground.
If you want to camp with us, let know what nights, how many people, and how many cars. Everyone so far has signed up for both Friday and Saturday nights.
If you're not interested in camping, you can still join us Saturday night for the campfire and music. Of course, everyone is invited to bring an instrument to the campfire or just come to join in on the fun. We always have many of the "motel/cabin people" come and join us for an outdoor evening. It's more fun than watching TV! Well, maybe not for everyone.
September is a great time to be up in the Tahoe area, so thanks to Joan and Rosemary (Event Directors), Donatas and Greg (Course Setters), Scott Novotny and Alex Finch (Event Coordinators), and to the event volunteers for making this event happen.
