The annual BAOC volunteer-appreciation Orienteering event and social will be held at Bon Tempe on November 13 and 14th. The event is open to anyone who has volunteered at any of our club events during 2010. The event is being held a month earlier than usual this year, in hopes that the winter rains will not have started. We will be using the shelter at the back of the park that we have used for the past few years.

The courses on offer are as follows:

  Course Length Climb Controls
  Short 3.8 km 190 m 10
  Medium 5.4 km 290 m 13
  Long 7.0 km 365 m 20

See the Course Setter's Notes for more information.

The courses will be the same for each day, with the results combined, and a notation whether it was a Saturday run or a Sunday run. That being said, if there is a big difference in the weather conditions between Saturday and Sunday (bright and sunny one day, and pouring rain the next), we will list the result separately.

Since the subject of epunch at BAOC events is being discussed (on the BayONet), Penny and I have decided to use pin punching at Bon Tempe this year. There are several reasons for this decision. We can give the epunch crew a day off — with no downloading from the GeBe unit that evening or the next day. Also, using epunch is a lot more work for Penny and me, for what is basically a "low key" club event for a select few, and a social gathering afterwards. Runners with "split watches" can use them and compare their splits at the social afterwards.

Comment from the BAOC Event Coordinator

"Harold and Penny (both long-term serial club volunteers themselves) will be hosting this event as a thank-you for all the other tireless volunteers in the club. If you haven't been to this event before, just ask someone who has — this is an event not to be missed. The combination of terrain, weather, and spread of goodies waiting upon your return make this event truly unique! And all you have to do to be allowed to participate is do your share of volunteering for the club. Without your support, we would not be able to have events year round. Thank You!" — Alex Finch, BAOC Event Coordinator

Driving Directions

From Highway 101 in Greenbrae, take the Sir Francis Drake Blvd exit, and go West for 5.5 miles to the town of Fairfax. Turn left at Claus Dr (Rino gas station on the right), and then immediately take another left onto Broadway.

Turn right at the next corner, which is Bolinas Rd. Stay on Bolinas Rd for 1.5 miles. Turn left at the large, brown wooden sign with white lettering that says "Lake Lagunitas".

Stay on this road until you reach the ranger kiosk. Pay the entrance fee ($8) at the pay-and-display machine. Proceed on the road to the parking lot at the very end. (Do not turn right on the gravel road to Bon Tempe Dam.)

Note: There will not be any orienteering signs posted, since the Water District requests that we keep a low profile.
