China Camp State Park

Date: (Sun.) Jul. 10, 2005
Location: San Rafael, CA
Event Director: - 415.479.4262
Course Setter: Rex Winterbottom
Type: B; Standard White through Blue courses

On Sunday, July 10, 2005, orienteering will return to China Camp State Park in beautiful Marin County on the shores of San Pablo Bay. All seven standard courses -- White, Yellow, Orange, Brown, Red, and Blue -- will be available. A Long Orange course will also be available for adventure racers. Rex Winterbottom will be designing the advanced courses. He promises really great courses both challenging and fun.

The park features gentle, open hills, large grassy meadows, a salt marsh, and steep forested slopes with breathtaking views of the bay. The forest consists of oak, bay, and some redwoods. Unfortunately, China Camp has been hit hard with the Sudden Oak Death, so there are a lot of downed oak trees and limbs that might interrupt your direction of travel. Other hazards are poison oak and ticks.

The event site will be Miwok Meadows, where there are barbecue pits, toilets, and lots of picnic tables. However there is no running water.

Hope to see you all there.

Schedule

Registration is open 9:00 to noon.
Starts are available until 12:30.
Courses close at 2:00. (You must check in by then whether or not you finish your course.)

Additional comments by Rex Winterbottom, Course Setter:

The full range of beginner and advanced courses will be available. The advanced courses will be set to minimize climb, maximize runnability (i.e., cut down on the thick vegetation), and will feature more controls and lots of changes of direction. It will be like a short course, but standard length and fun. Watch your small mistakes, because they will add up! Precise orienteers will be rewarded. (See the Course Setter's Notes for details.)

Driving Directions

China Camp State Park is located 15-20 minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge, and a few miles northeast of downtown San Rafael. Exit Highway 101 at North San Pedro Road (near the Marin County Civic Center), and go east (towards the bay) 3.5 miles to the entrance to Miwok Meadows. Please park off the roadway, and walk a short distance (about 500 meters) down the gravel fire road to the picnic area. There is limited parking available at the event site that will be reserved for the volunteers helping put on the event.
