A beautiful, warm day greeting over 100 participants at Lake Herman. The unusual warmth (at least for February) pleased most competitors, though also brought out a lot of sweat and red faces at the finish line!
Course setter Petra Sundstrom designed courses to take advantage of the rolling terrain, utilizing the many similar features to confuse people who thought they were heading out into "easy" navigation. The winning times confirmed the appropriateness of both distance and climb, with many short legs interspersed with longer ones, tempting people to lose track of which spur/reentrant they were on/in! In places, the grass was quite short thanks to herds of goats brought in earlier in the month to minimize the summer fire danger, and while the ground was soft from all the rain we've recently experienced, muddy bogs were few and mostly easily avoided.
Quite a few people trying one of the three beginner courses enjoyed them so much they went out on a second course. Hopefully, those people caught the bug, and will be coming out to future events soon!
The only blemish on this great day pertained to two White course controls going AWOL — discovered when they were all being collected. We are hoping they just got moved, and will be looking for them next week. Losing controls is always a potential hazard, especially ones right on trails, but fortunately are rare occurrences.
I have lots of people to thank for the success of the event.
- First, course setter Petra Sundstrom designed the great courses, and set out all the controls herself on Friday and Saturday morning. She also printed the maps, and helped set up the Junior table, along with Julia Doubson, near registration.
- Jeff Lanam and crew John Blakkan, Phil Lacroute, and Rosemary Johnson ably ran the E-punch station without a hitch.
- The registration crew of Sarah Williams, Steve Haas, Chuck Spalding, and Matthias Kohler got everyone signed in and paid in a quick and efficient manner. Online registration and the on-site electronic pay system have simplified and sped up on-site registration greatly!
- I gave a couple of beginner clinics.
- Starts were handled by Kat Lan, and Olga and Gary Kraght.
- I had a wonderful crew of control pickers to get everything in quickly: Tac Sugiyama, Cedric Lafargues, Deron van Hoff, Olaf Sundstrom, Vicki Woolworth, Rex Winterbottom, and Recinda Shermin visiting from LAOC!
Lastly, I want to thank Dominguez Dickerson, the Permit Director for the city of Benicia, who made getting a permit for this event a snap. He treated us like desired customers of his service, and thinks our events are a great use of the park.

- RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the Start line and leaving the Start Triangle. The offset can have a significant impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, you should set the offset to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).
- RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
