Event Write-Up
By
What a turnout! A great crowd of orienteers came, saw, and conquered the courses this past Sunday at our first Summer Series event.
This event had a shaky start, as surprisingly, no club member volunteered ahead of time to be the Event Director. However, this club doesn't let such details stop us from going out and cruising through the incredible scenic and varied terrain. Multitudes of club members stepped up and took on rolls, all of which allowed for a fun day by the Golden Gate.
First time course setter Brian Ritchken, designed courses with challenging route choices, through much of the "wilderness" part of the park, as well as visiting some of the historic built up areas. At the finish I heard many participants comment how fun the courses were, and many commented on the great views they had, while trying to locate the next control on their course. I'm sure we'll all be looking forward to the next time Brian creates courses for us! I did notice that some people either missed or ignored his Course Setter Note about the advisability of wearing long pants due to the thick vegetation in places. Several of these folks came in with blood running down their legs, but nary a complaint was to be heard from them. Orienteers are tough, or thick headed, perhaps a bit of both!
The conditions were perfect for running, with fog, and occasional mist, keeping everyone cool, and with a bonus that the usual wind was almost non-existent!
Really about the only issue we had was that, near the end of the day, we ran out of maps for all three courses! This was due to my failure to check the on-line registration figures, which would have told me we needed to print more maps! Fortunately, we were off by only a few on each course, and by re-cycling maps of early finishers, I believe every one who wanted to go out on a course was able to.
As I mentioned above, this event wouldn't have occurred without club members stepping up and taking on the many roles.
- Deron Von Hoff obtained the permit and insurance for the event. He also set up the spreadsheet for people to sign themselves up for day-of rolls.
- Brian was critical to the success of the event as the course setter.
- Jeff Lanam, Tac Sugiyama, and several others (whose names unfortunately escape me) ran e-punch, while the erstwhile trio of Sarah Williams, Steve Haas, and Chuck Spalding handled registration.
- Graham Brew helped with early setup, and took the first start shift, relieved by Vicki Woolworth, and then Josh Zhanson.
- Kat Lan was everywhere, with early setup, directing people to registration and answering countless questions from newcomers. She was also part of the control-pick-up crew, and helped break down the event center at the end of the day.
- Sheila Cotter ran numerous beginners clinics, including one where I think I saw at least 20 people following her every word!
- Control pick up was quickly handled by the aforementioned Kat Lan and Josh Zhanson, as well as Olga Kraght, Drew Taplin, Tac Sugiyama, and course setter Brian Ritchken.
Thanks to everyone for coming out and making the even a success!

Thanks to Scott Aster and Brian Ritchken for a very fun and well attended event in the mists of the Presidio. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to make this happen, and a special thanks to Tac Sugiyami and John Blakken, who answered the call for E-punch trainees, attended a Zoom meeting earlier in the week and took shifts behind the computers. Expect to see more new faces at E-punch during the summer.
Jeff Lanam, E-punch
- We all should be very grateful to Scott Aster for stepping in as Event Director, in addition to his role as Regional Event Coordinator. That is, Scott filled the role when nobody signed up to be Event Director. This is the fourth time he has done that this year.
- Note that we do not have an Event Director for the Diablo Valley College event on July 12. On behalf of Vicki Woolworth (), the East Bay Regional Event Coordinator, please consider being the Event Director at that event. (Information about the Event Director role is here.)
- Chuck Spalding, Webmaster's Assistant
You can see control-by-control timing in the WinSplits results (http://www.obasen.nu/winsplits/online/en/show_event.asp?id=105681) and on Attackpoint (https://www.attackpoint.org/eventdetail.jsp/event_58987).
You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=566). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- In RouteGadget, you can enter your route manually or upload a GPS recording and adjust to fit our map. The following tips apply to the GPS method.
- RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the Start line and leaving the Start Triangle. The offset can have a significant impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, the offset should be set to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).
- RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
Please tell Jeff Lanam () and the webmasters () if anything needs to be changed.
