Event Write-Up
, Event Director
Despite the early morning frost, our day at Point Pinole was sunny and reasonably warm, especially if you stayed out of the shade. It wasn’t exactly dry, at least on the intermediate courses, but course setter Steve Gregg gave us plenty of warning about the soggy conditions. Over 150 orienteers showed up to participate, including members of the Berkeley High Orienteering Club and Carson City NJROTC, and some groups of coworkers.
Notable results included these:
- Greg Khanlarov edged out Wayne Staats on the 8.7 km Combo Orange course.
- Paul Roome of South Ribble OC was a clear win on the Long Orange course.
- Mikkel Conradi took first on the Sprint Orange course.
- Ashley and Keira Graham took the top two spots on the White course.
- On the Yellow course, many teams competed, with Team Claudeanos coming out on top.
- Mark Sasaki started with Yellow, and then did both the Sprint Orange and Long Orange courses — three courses in one day.
Even with a smaller-scale event, it takes more than a few people to put it on. In addition to Steve Gregg’s efforts in course setting, map printing, and other useful stuff, we had other very helpful volunteers. Graham Brew came early to set up, and also did the first start shift. Josh Zhanson not only shopped for and brought refreshments, he also helped set up and clean up. The registration team was Sarah Williams, Steve Haas, Chuck Spalding, and Dennis Wildfogel. Chuck Spalding also maintained the web site and provided timely reminders when updates were needed. The cleanup crew also included Neville Fernandes, Beverly Freeman, and Stephanie MacLean. The control-pickup team consisted of Werner Haag, Gavin Wyatt-Mair, John Richardson, Rex Winterbottom, and Tapio Karras.
Julia Doubson organized an Intermediate Training session that was attended by one lucky orienteer. I guess folks were hurrying home to their Super Bowl parties. Thanks, Julia, for trying.
We are very grateful to the East Bay Regional Park District, to Park Supervisor Rob Diekman, as well as Claudia and Saul and the rest of the staff, for granting us permission to use this park and for excellent maintenance.

Course Setter's Inquiry
By Steve Gregg () [posted to the BayONet (https://groups.io/g/BAOC) 2/9/25]
Given that at today's event:
- We only had five entries on the White course, all of whom were adults I believe.
- We had two White-course control units stolen, apparently as the event was in progress.
- Designing a White course involves setting out at least six controls that are shared by no other course.
Does it make sense to stop setting a White course at all at this particular venue?
I can quite easily set legitimate Yellow-level courses at Point Pinole for which every single control bag is visible from a trail, and for which going off-trail for a few dozen meters to reach each bag is physically simple. Why not just do this, and label this course "Beginner"? It would simplify the control-setting process by quite a bit, and hopefully deter the control thieves. Yes, if a person with a physical disability happened to show up, who could not leave the trails at all, we could not accommodate them, but I frankly don't think we need to worry about this scenario ever occurring.
What do people think about this idea? Any downsides that I have not considered?

You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=553). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- In RouteGadget, you can enter your route manually or upload a GPS recording and adjust to fit our map. The following tips apply to the GPS method.
- RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the Start line and leaving the Start Triangle. The offset can have a significant impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, the offset should be set to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).
- RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
Please tell Jay Hann () and the webmasters () if anything needs to be changed.
