On Sunday, October 26, 2025, NJROTC units from four California and Nevada schools gathered at Briones Regional Park for a day of competitive orienteering. Despite the cool weather and intermittent rain, the event was a success, providing cadets with both challenge and learning opportunities in navigation, endurance, and decision-making.
The terrain at Briones offered rolling hills, dense vegetation, and limited visibility in certain areas — conditions that required focus, patience, and strong map-reading skills. The course designs were well-balanced, accommodating both experienced and novice orienteers.
Performance Summary
- Carson High School
- Carson’s Intermediate Team delivered an outstanding performance, sweeping the top three places in both the male and female divisions. The JV Female Team also dominated with a top-seven sweep, while the JV Male Team captured the top two finishes.
- This consistent showing reflects excellent preparation, teamwork, and leadership within the Carson HS unit.
- Reedley High School
- Reedley claimed victory in the Varsity Division, being the only school to field a complete team of three finishers in that category. Their cadets displayed exceptional stamina and technical skill on a demanding course.
- Reedley also earned 1st Place Overall for the meet, demonstrating the strength and consistency of their top competitors across all divisions.
- Milpitas HS and Damonte Ranch HS
- Both schools brought enthusiastic cadets, including many first-time competitors. Their participation added to the event’s overall success, and several cadets showed promise for future advancement with additional training and course familiarization.
Conclusion
The Briones Regional Park orienteering meet was a strong success, marked by excellent sportsmanship, teamwork, and enthusiasm from all participating schools. A special shout-out to LCDR Carlos Montanez, from Turlock HS NJROTC and c/Ensign Emily Suitt Payne, from Carson HS NJROTC, for volunteering their time to help organize the event. The event provided valuable training, competitive experience, and leadership opportunities for cadets of all levels. Congratulations to Carson High School for dominating the Intermediate and JV categories, and to Reedley High School for winning the Varsity Division and earning 1st Place Overall for the meet.
Continued focus on individual performance integrity, proper course assignment, and new-cadet development will ensure even greater success in future events.
