Event Write-Up
By
Well, we dodged a bullet. The day before the Indian Valley event, it rained about two inches. But Sunday, May 5, was clear and sunny, if a bit on the cold side. Around 140 orienteers came out to enjoy the wildflowers and wildlife, and the revised map prepared by Bill Cusworth. For oldtimers, it was their first chance to orienteer at Indian Valley in eight years. Some things were radically different, mostly about the Indian Valley College campus, which has been completely reconstructed, while other things remained maddeningly familiar, such as the steep gullies.
The course setter, Petra Sundstrom, designed courses that avoided nasty climb, and allowed for fast running on some legs. As a result, a number of participants went out on two courses, and one finished three! Unfortunately, the E-punch unit from the final control on all the courses was stolen very soon after being set up, but it was quickly replaced after the first finisher reported it missing. Course setting was a family affair, as Petra had help from her husband Olof, her children, and even her parents visiting from Sweden.
We had wonderful cooperation from the College of Marin in making the event happen. I worked with Sarah Paoli, who navigated me through the permit process and recommended the best location to set up registration. She was on campus during the event, and enjoyed watching all of the orienteers running in various directions. We will be welcomed back next year!
I was initially worried about having enough volunteer help for the event, as Marin County doesn’t have many BAOC members. But almost everyone I contacted readily agreed to help. And then more volunteers, unsolicited, began popping up. In the end, I actually had to turn down offers of help! So a heartfelt thank-you, everyone. The volunteer honor roll is:
- Set Up: Olga Kraght, Johanna Merriss, Goktug Coban, Petra Sundstrom
- Starts: Goktug Coban, Rahel Schneider, Mattias Vangbo, Mattias’s wife
- E-punch: Jeff Lanam, Olga Kraght
- Registration: Sarah Williams, Steve Haas, Dennis Wildfogel
- Beginner Clinics: Scott Aster
- Control Pickup: Bill Cusworth, Tom De Vre, Theo Verhoeven, Steve Gregg, Steve O’Keefe, Olga Kraght
- Takedown/Cleanup: Rex Winterbottom, Eric Rosenzweig, Olga Kraght
- Mapping: Bill Cusworth
- Course Setting: Petra Sundstrom
- Course Vetting: Olof Sundstrom, Petra’s children and parents, Gary Kraght, Olga Kraght
- College of Marin Liaison: Sarah Paoli
- BAOC Website Support: Chuck Spalding
Apologies to anyone I may have inadvertently missed.

You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=538). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- In RouteGadget, you can enter your route manually or upload a GPS recording and adjust to fit our map. The following tips apply to the GPS method.
- RouteGadget Tip #1: After selecting your GPX file, make sure to adjust the time offset between starting your watch at the start line and leaving the start triangle. The offset can have a significant impact on your route accuracy. For most local events, the offset should be set to 0 as we start from the triangle (assuming you started your watch exactly when you started).
- RouteGadget Tip #2: After uploading your GPS track to RouteGadget, you can create additional blue adjustment points by right-clicking your track. You can use these points to better align your route with the map, for example, along trails. You can delete extra adjustment points by right-clicking them.
Please tell Jeff Lanam () and the webmasters () if anything needs to be changed.
