Rain, Goats, Software Problems and 11th-hour Solutions
Rain
Steve Gregg and I have teamed up for the annual Point Pinole Orienteering event for many years. Now that this event is scheduled in January, one of our major concerns is weather. We both remember past events in January, February, and even March when the weather was less than ideal. Winter storms can move in off San Francisco Bay quickly, with heavy rain and high winds making orienteering miserable if not impossible.
For last year’s event we jokingly asked BAOC Events Coordinator Graham Brew to coordinate the weather. Graham did an excellent job last year, and so we assigned him the same task this year. The week prior to the event, the weather forecast was looking marginal at best. It was still raining when I drove to the park at 6:30 on Sunday. Then, as we began setting up tents and other equipment, the rain stopped, the sun came out and we had beautiful weather for the remainder of the day. Thanks, Graham ... but next time, please don’t wait until the last minute.
Goats
This time of year, the park has a large herd of goats on site to help manage vegetation. The goats are contained by an electric fence that is moved to a fresh grazing area daily. When Steve and I were setting out controls on Saturday afternoon, the fence was moved, and one of the key controls was inside the fence. Steve removed the control from the goat enclosure, selected a new control feature and had to make a last-minute change to each of the Relay loop maps.
Software Problems and 11th-hour Solutions
The eleventh-hour map changes encountered a problem with the software. Resolution of the issue and printing the revised maps ran into the wee hours of the morning for both Steve and Jay.
That’s the event preparation “back-storyâ€. So, for participants (particularly those new to the sport) who enjoyed the sunny mild weather and a smooth-running orienteering event, you have a better idea the amount of time (and a bit of luck) that went into making the event possible. This event was certainly not unique; orienteering by its very nature requires thoughtful, time-consuming work by the Course Setter to design a variety of challenging courses, and a large number of volunteers to make things run smoothly on the day of the event. My thanks to our Course Setter and all the volunteers—you did a great job!
This year, at East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) request, our event center returned to the Palms Picnic Area site, a short walk from the Giant Highway Parking Lot. For the first time, we obtained a vehicle permit, and were allowed to drive Jay’s pickup and equipment trailer to the Palms Picnic site. This greatly facilitated hauling all the equipment needed at the event center.
The Courses
This year’s event consisted of Beginner (White and Yellow) and Intermediate (Orange) courses, and a “One-Man†Relay.
The Beginner and Intermediate courses were standard point-to-point courses.
The Relay had a remote Start and Finish about one kilometer from the event center, and a mass start at 11:30. Each runner had to complete three short loops through relatively flat, forested terrain. The Course Setter billed the Relay as a “Forest Sprintâ€. There were several “forked†controls on each loop to keep it interesting. One unique aspect of this race was that a separate E-stick was required for each loop (due to software constraints), so runners had to manage three E-sticks in addition to a map of each Relay loop.
We had a good turnout, with about 125 participants on the White/Yellow/Orange courses, and 44 competing in the “One-Man†Relay.
The Results
White course (2.6 km, 45 m climb, 11 controls): Winner Team Remarkable Fishes with a time of 34:37
Yellow course (2.8 km, 70 m climb, 12 controls): Winner Piotr Pisarchyk with a time of 24:36
Orange course (4.2 km, 75 m climb, 10 controls): Winner Michael Behrens with a time of 36.49
“One-Man†Relay (3 loops totaling 4.5 km, 100 m climb, 24 controls):
- Winner Siargey Pisarchyk, time 22:35
- Second Place Michael Crone, time 23:32
- Third Place François Léonard, time 25:32
- Course Setter Steve Gregg had this additional comment about the Relay:
- “Siargey, Erin, and A.J. took part in an all-out sprint to the Finish punch, and finished the Relay within seconds of each other. Unfortunately, Erin and A.J. both mis-punched—not sure if they were ‘real’ mis-punches, or SI Air+ issues. Many runners ran the race with SI Air+ punches, and as someone who is not used to being a spectator at modern orienteering events, it was a bit disconcerting to me to see the runners fly by the controls without even slowing down.â€

Lost & Found
Lost
A.J. Riley thinks he left his control description holder at the remote Relay Start. I scoured the area carefully after everyone finished the Relay, but found nothing. So, if you happened to pick this up by mistake, please let A.J. know.
Found
- A blue Ecovessel water bottle
- A wooden walking stick with a hand-carved flower design near the handle.
If either of these items belongs to you, let know, and we'll figure out how to get it to you.
