We had 157 starts, consisting of 294 people, participating in the Calero event. Temperatures were mild, in the mid-70’s, and the later-than-usual date meant that the stickers & burrs in the grassy areas were mostly gone and the poison oak had no more oily leaves.
Rich Parker set detailed courses that minimized climb. This prompted some to move up a course level, resulting in nearly twice as many runners on the 7.1 km Blue course as the 6.2 km Red course, and caused us to briefly run out of Blue maps.
The White course was won by Troop 343, followed a few minutes later by Anna Staats, who was just one second ahead of Beatrice Schreibstein of OCIN. Yellow was headed by Jason Reed (38:31), who later came in fifth on the Brown course. The first “true†Yellow competitor was “Smirnoff†at 48:36, almost 12 min ahead of the “Blue Twigsâ€.
Dan Ingram brought his NJROTC team from Carson City, NV, and topped a challenging Orange course (going solo), slightly ahead of Aravin & Rassieur. The Brown and Green courses were the most popular, with nearly 30 entries each. Dennis Wildfogel topped Brown in 55:25, just ahead of Peter Laraia and Kai Douglas. Kevin Culberg was the clear winner on Green in 42 min, a full 12 min ahead of Steve Gregg and Riley Dunn.
Tapio Karras moved up to Red from his age-course Green, and bested Fyodor Konkov and Kyle Halliday by about 13 minutes. Blue was a “Riley†affair, with Riley Culberg (1:11:07) edging out Anthony Riley (1:11:09) by a mere 2 seconds. Anthony’s dad Wyatt Riley was fourth in 1:17:22, just behind François Léonard (1:16:19). Wyatt was a long-time BAOC member before moving out east and raising a family. We’re glad to see them back at some BAOC events now that Anthony is at Stanford and Wyatt comes for work and visits.
