Event Write-Up

This year we had approximately 135 people attend our annual event, and we did have more people pre-register for the event this year. It was wonderful to see so many people, especially young people and families, turn out this year. We had many scouts. The decorations in the neighborhood were incredible, and many other people were out walking around the neighborhood enjoying the decorations. I bet it's one of the best decorated neighborhoods in the Bay Area.
They have changed the way you get a permit to use the facility, and this year I went through Facilitron to get the permit, it is easy to get and they let me know right away that we had permission. Sometimes we wait months to get the permission, as you might notice that many of our events have "pending park permission" even two weeks before the event. Our club now has an account with them, and it will be easy for other event directors to get their permits. It's too bad that we can't use Facilitron to get permits for all our events, especially the East Bay events!
Peter Graube had a good crowd again this year to listen to his interesting Water Play presentation. He really holds his audience's attention.
Congratulations to Vicki Woolworth, the winner of this year's BAOC Service Award. Thanks, Vicki, for all you have done to help the club!
Thanks for making this event possible go to:
- Tony Pinkham and Brad Wetmore, the course setters, for all their hard work on this event. They set the really interesting courses and added content for the BAOC Holiday Lights webpage. Brad ran the starts and finishes, and Tony was out from 6:15–7:15 with the moving control. This year his moving control went in a loop, which made it more interesting to catch up with him. He's moving to Oregon, so we'll miss seeing him at this event in the future.
- Jitka Hiscox, our assistant course setter, who is interested in course setting and worked with Brad and Tony.
- Steve Haas for handling registration and the presentation of the Service Award.
- Bob Cooley for printing the maps.
- Chuck Spalding for help with the website.
- Brad Wetmore for setting up the on-line sign-up form.
- Marina Keeting for handling the insurance.
- Steve Harrison, Fyodor Konkov, Chuck Spalding, Matthias Kohler, and Shirley Pierce for help with results/finishes.
- Peter Graube for bringing in all the science equipment, and giving the popular Water Play presentation.
- Kathie Wiegant for help with setup/teardown, and everyone else who pitched in to help, including the father of a scout who helped the custodian figure out how to get the benches and tables down.
- And everyone for coming out and participating in the event.

The results for the 2017 Willow Glen Holiday Lights Night Score-O event are below. Note that tie scores were broken by elapsed time (if two people have the same scores, but different times, the one with less time on the course is placed ahead of the other competitor).
Note: 135 people registered, but I count at most only 80–90 people in the results, which means that some people didn’t turn in their answer sheets (or some group/family teams had a lot more than 3 people). If you didn’t finish a course, remember next time to let us know when you are done so that we don’t have to go out looking for you—this is a serious matter especially when we are competing in the wilderness.
My apologies if I misspelled your name (it was difficult reading some handwritings of names). If I have your name wrong, let know and I’ll correct your listing in these results.

60-Minute Class 90-Minute Class
You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=404). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- Since this is a Score-O setup with no E-punch, RouteGadget knows only the Start and Finish locations. All the control circles are included directly on the map image.
- You need to enter your name and total time in MMMSS format before drawing/uploading your route. For example, 89:52 is entered as 8952.
- When drawing your route be sure to visit the Finish only after you have completed your route. That is, the blue line pointing to the Finish should follow you throughout your route. You can also upload your GPS track if you have one.
- For the animation, each competitor's speed is averaged out over the whole length of their (manually drawn) route. For Score-O this works out just fine as competitors often end up taking very different routes anyway.
- To learn to use RouteGadget, view the video here (http://routegadget.net/download.cgi). (Note that the video has no audio!)
