This year we had approximately 145 people attend our annual event. It was wonderful to see so many people especially young people and families turn out this year. We had many scout groups. The young people especially liked the hot cider, hot chocolate, and cookies that were waiting for them when they finished their course!
As always, we had lots of great food for the potluck.
We almost ran out of maps and answer sheets, so we will try to encourage more people to preregister next year.
We were really lucky to have a clear, cool night. Isn't it fun to be out on the course at night?
Contour came in first in the 60-minute category, with Vladimir Gusiatnikov and Beatrice Schreibstein coming in second, and being the top family to finish.
Jason Reed, Rex Winterbottom, and Graham Brew were at the top of the 90-minute finishers, and the Rosenzweig family was fifth overall and the first family.
Peter Graube had a good crowd to listen to his interesting Water Play presentation.
Congratulations to Tapio Karras, the winner of this year's BAOC Service Award. Thanks, Tapio, for all you have done to help the club! So many people like to check out the routes on RouteGadget.
Thanks for making this event possible go to:
- Tony Pinkham and Brad Wetmore, the course setters, for all their hard work on this event. They set the really interesting courses, added content for the BAOC Holiday Lights webpage, and photos and content for the BAOC Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bay-Area-Orienteering-Club/208432029957). They ran the starts and finishes, and Tony was out from 6:15–7:15 with the moving control.
- Steve Haas for handling registration and the presentation of the Service Award.
- Bob Cooley for printing the maps.
- Chuck Spalding for help with the website.
- Rex Winterbottom (our former Event Coordinator), who helped get this event on the schedule, and thanks to Steve Harrison (our current Event Coordinator), who is working with us now to get next year's Holiday Lights event on the 2017 schedule.
- Brad Wetmore for setting up the on-line sign-up form.
- Marina Keeting for handling the insurance.
- Kevin, Eyelyn, and Dan Cox, and Donald Taggart, for working on the results. We had so many participants that it did take a while to check all the answers.
- Peter Graube for bringing in all the science equipment, and giving the popular Water Play presentation.
- And thanks to everyone for coming on a cool night to our annual Willow Glen Holiday Lights event.

We had approximately 145 people this year, with several from local Scouting groups saying they want to bring their own units next year.
The standings were determined first by Total Points, then by least Total Time.
We announced preliminary winners at the event. However, we were informed of two issues that affected the final standings. Apologies to those who were affected, and thanks for bringing it to our attention.
The event staff apologizes for any names that are misspelled below. Several of the clue-sheet names were hard to read this year. Please contact us with corrections.

You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget for this event (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=387). (Use of RouteGadget is explained here.)
- Notes regarding RouteGadget:
- Since this is a Score-O setup with no E-punch, RouteGadget only knows about the Start and Finish locations. All the control circles are included directly on the map image. When drawing your route, be sure to visit the Finish only when you have completed your route. That is, the blue line pointing to the Finish should follow you throughout your route. You can also upload your GPS track if you have one.
- You need to enter your name and total time in MMMSS format before drawing/uploading your route. For example, 89:52 is entered as 8952.
- For the animation, each competitor's speed is averaged out over the whole length of their (manually drawn) route. This works out just fine for Score-O, as competitors often end up taking very different routes anyway.
