Event Write-Up

Rolling green hills and brilliant blue skies greeted the 150 orienteers who ventured to Benicia for the inaugural event on BAOC's newest map. With generally open terrain, pleasant temperature, fairly soft ground, and modest climbs, conditions were favorable for very fast times, and the results showed that to be the case.
Greg Mandler won the White course. Teresa Jansson was in second place and the first female finisher. Greg, incidentally, proceeded to run Yellow, Orange, and Brown, and turned in good times on all of them. Leander Coolen was victorious on Yellow. For the most part, groups ran Yellow, with about 60 people altogether running this course. The team of Benjamin, Zi, and Matias had a solid win on Orange, with a time that compared well with BAOC advanced runners who did Orange as a second course.
On the Brown course, Ray Rosenbaum won over Tommy Ingulfsen in the closest results of the day, with a mere 70-second margin. Leslie Minarik was the first female on Brown.
With Green being the hardest course offered, it featured a strong and crowded field (36 entries). Erin Schirm ran a solid race to win by about two minutes over François Léonard. Francois had the fastest time on most legs, but lost enough time on the innocuous-looking control #10 to give up the lead. Bill Cusworth was third, and Tori Borish was the first female in fourth.
The herd of goats that has been grazing in the park for the past several weeks obviously decided they needed a better view of the competition, so in the very early hours of Sunday they marched about 700 meters down the hill and set themselves up by Green #11 and Brown #10, along with their (mildly electrified) fences. I had seen some new temporary fences in the area Saturday afternoon while setting controls, but had been informed on Friday that the goats would still be well away from the action. My apologies to anybody who encountered difficulty due to the surprise obstacles in this area.
Fitting for an event on Oscar Sunday, I have many people to thank. First is Emily Radtke, who two years ago, as a middle-school student, decided to make an orienteering map of her favorite local park for her Girl Scout Silver Award project. I got to be her project adviser, and I was impressed with the effort and skill she put into this. Right behind Emily is her mother, Betsy Radtke, who apparently knows everybody in Benicia and made the process of putting on this event easier at every step. Now for our other wonderful volunteers:
- Vetter: Greg Khanlarov
- Registration: Gary Kraght, Judy Koehler, Chuck Spalding
- Starts: Esther Heller, Greg Ehrensing
- Beginners Clinics: Dan Greene, Gavin Wyatt-Mair
- Junior Training: Erin Schirm
- E-punch: Rosemary Johnson, George Minarik, Jeff Lanam
- Refreshments: Betsy Radtke
- Setup: Kevin Walker
- Control Pickup: Miguel Clark, Steve Harrison, Graham and Christine Brew, Steve Haas, Chuck Spalding
- Insurance: Marina Keating
- Website: Chuck Spalding
- Maps: Bob Cooley
Finally, I want to thank Ann Dunleavy and Rick Knight of the City of Benicia for their support.
Lake Herman proved to be a pretty interesting and user-friendly venue, and I hope that somebody who doesn't need to cross two bridges and two area codes to reach it will continue BAOC's presence here.

Also see control-by-control timing in the WinSplits results (http://www.obasen.nu/winsplits/online/en/show_event.asp?id=34882). Note, however, that the WinSplits for the Yellow course are not displayed correctly due to an unknown problem. The Yellow-course splits can be seen in this file (PDF/30KB), which contains the splits for all the courses (but not with the nice WinSplits features).
You can see the event map with the actual routes traveled by participants, and draw your own route for comparison, in RouteGadget. (Use of RouteGadget is explained here. RouteGadget for this event is here (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=355).) Interestingly, the Yellow splits seem to work perfectly for RouteGadget. You can also view them in Splitalyzer (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=splitalyzer&id=355).
