Event Write-Up
By
I'm sorry it's taken so long to do this event write-up. Unfortunately, the week after the event I broke both wrists, so I've been laid up for a couple of weeks. I am attempting to do this write-up using speech recognition software.
We had fantastic weather this year, sunny and mild with a light breeze off the bay. The great weather brought out a lot of participants (approximately 180), encouragingly many of the participants were new to Orienteering and seemed to have a great time at the event. There were several Girl Scout groups this year—I was told that after one group finished the White course one of the Girl Scouts said to her mother "Mom can I make this my sport?".
Sarah Minarik brought a large group of friends who appeared to have a lot of experience in various running events; however, I believe this was the first Orienteering experience for most of them. They seemed to enjoy it, and we hope to see them again at future Orienteering meets. Thank you, Sarah, for introducing some new young athletes to Orienteering!
This year, course setter Steve Gregg designed five point-to-point courses. In addition to traditional White and Yellow courses, Steve set three advanced-level courses of varying lengths. Due to terrain limitations at Point Pinole, the control placements on the advanced courses were typically of Orange level of difficulty. Steve designed the advanced courses to test a competitor's ability to run hard between controls and navigate accurately at high-speed. There is an old saying in orienteering "If the navigation seems too easy, you're not running fast enough."
The White course winning time of 29:43 was posted by the group of Angela Reed, Monica Hamlett, and Alex Coari. Katie Barrow took second place with a time of 37:38. Marie and Frankie Johnson finished in third place.
The Yellow course winner was Beth Dameron at 28:34, followed very closely by Rick Boyer at 28:50. Third-place finisher Maria Sophia Fedyk was not far behind at 31:00.
The advanced courses were very competitive, and the winning times were fast as predicted by course setter Steve Gregg.
- Short Orange (3.5 km, 17 controls): Winner Sarah Minarik at 30:53 (8.82 min/km). Hope Fa-Kaji was second at 33:34, and third place when to Natalie Kim at 37:08.
- Medium Orange (4.4 km, 24 controls): Winner Dennis Wildfogel at 35:06 (7.98 min/km). James Wilson was second at 40:33, and Lauren Knight finished third at 41:12.
- Long Orange (5.6 km, 30 controls): The winner was François Léonard with an incredibly fast time of 30:04 (5.36 min/km). That is an average of one minute per control, folks!! Matej Sebo finished second at 31:57, and Stephen Granger-Bevan was third with a time of 32:58. Penny DeMoss was the first woman on Long Orange with a time of 46:20.

Note: I have used the January 2014 membership report to identify club membership. So, if you expect to see BAOC next to your name and see a blank instead, this means that your membership needs to be renewed. I decided to do this because, since we no longer get a bulletin, it's tough to know when to renew. I may not do this for every event, so only when I specifically mention this will this be a reminder. (If you have a question regarding membership, you should contact the .) – , E-Punch Director
