Event Write-Up

This event almost did not occur. Various factors put it late in the season — after the Pacheco event. We could not get a course setter. We had nearly called off the event when Damian Swift stepped up to the challenge. He agreed to set not only the standard 7 courses, but a Long Orange in addition (for our adventure racing friends). Werner Haag also stepped up to help organize and run the event, dedicating many hours.
Bob Cooley printed the maps and control descriptions. Alan Glendenning provided access to equipment.
On the day of the event, Jim Fish, Rosemary Johnson, Jeff Lanam, and Mark Blair arrived early to help set up. Rosemary also worked epunch most of the day, with Mark assisting. Steve Haas singlehandedly handled registration. Theo Verhoeven, Greg Ehrensing, Greg Favor, Cedric LasFargues, Steve Haas, Damon Ward, Jan Vanhoutte, Jim Fish, and Mark Blair picked up the controls and water stops. Mark Blair also spent a lot of time preparing the results. Many people too numerous to mention helped in other ways. The efforts of all these people made this event a success. Thank you!
The day of the event was cold, with rain threatening much of the day. It was also Mother’s Day, so a lower turnout was expected. Still 126 people showed up to compete — a good turnout. They were rewarded with abundant wildflowers and clearing skies.
Hannah Kopisch dominated the White course. Bergstedt blazed in for first place on the Yellow course. David Harrison won the Orange course with a commanding lead. Elliott Delaye won Long Orange, Dennis Wildfogel won Brown, Werner Haag won Green, Deron van Hoff won Red, and Mikkel Conradi won Blue. Special thanks goes to Mikkel Conradi for running back and pointing out a missing control on Blue — while on the clock.
Until next year,
Peter

- Control #10 was missing on the Blue course during the time when most people on that course were searching for it. From a competitive standpoint, this made legs 9–10 and 10–11 unfair. Different runners spent different amounts of time searching for the missing control. The one or two who were fortunate enough to run through after the control had been replaced did not suffer this problem at all. We have accordingly reworked the Blue course results so that all runners' times on leg 9–10 are identical and all their times on leg 10–11 are identical. This effectively eliminates those two legs from the competition while still making it possible for all Blue course participants to enter their routes on RouteGadget using the original course map and course definition.
