Event Write-Up
by Judy Koehler
Heavy mist, alternating with light rain and patches of clear skies, made for soft footing and mild temperatures at the Spring Lake National Orienteering Day event. Brett Carver tackled his first course setting assignment with inventive White and Yellow courses that allowed choices for off-trail navigation. Scott Aster challenged those with experience to make rapid changes of direction on a three-loop Motala. Competitors could choose their distance by making a single loop or any combination of loops, with the first loop being part of the Sprint Series.
Duncan Kennemore, Austin Toby, and Terry Grothen of Troop 707, one of three Troop 707 groups, were the fastest on the White course with a time of 22:50. Joe and Carla Miller of Santa Rosa were so quick in winning the Yellow course in 34:15 that Joe went out and did two Motala loops. Francois Leonard was the fastest of all those who tackled all three Motala loops with a time of 44:27. Other winners on the various Motala combinations were Wayne Caplinger, Fyodor Konkov, Nickolay Chukanov, Joe Miller, and Julia Doubson.
As in past years, 75% of the competitors were either new or sometime participants. Youth prevailed, as Scouts, Montgomery High School, and Sacramento State students comprised most of the new competitors.
This meet could not have been possible without the help of the dedicated volunteers. Many thanks go to Scott Aster (course setter, equipment transfer, finishes), Brett Carver (course setter, clinics, results display, control pick-up), Erik Carver (assisted in course setting), Martin Taylor (set-up, finishes), Rick Budde (set-up), Marsha Jacobs (set-up, clinics), Gary Kraght (registration), Neil Peterson (registration, results calculation), Mel and Mark Conrad (starts), Tom and Sandy Guldman (starts), Joan Roos (starts), Greg Ehrensing (equipment coordinator, control pick-up), and Wayne Caplinger (control pick-up).
Also, thanks go to Bob Cooley for the maps, Harold and Penny DeMoss for the loan of their tents, Jill Meuchel from Sonoma County Regional Parks, and Orienteering USA for the box of "goodies" for celebrating National Orienteering Day.

Entering your route in RouteGadget:
Since e-punch was not used, the event is set up using the "no results" mode, where participants need to enter their name, total time, and any cumulative splits that they might have taken. Note that if you are uploading a GPS track, you don't need to enter your total time or splits.
You can draw your route even if you didn't take any splits — just enter your name and total time. Note that RouteGadget requires cumulative splits. Both splits and total time need to be in MMMSS format. For example, 0:57 is entered as "57", 5min43s as "543", and 1hr12min32s as "7232". That's easy.
