Event Write-Up
By
We had great weather in a lovely setting. We ran around in the woods. Rosemary Johnson and Joan Roos co-directed this event, and claim particular responsibility for the weather. I love the three-day format and can hardly wait for Boggs. The orienteering at Northstar and Burton Creek was good and greatly enjoyed, though we do apologize for any agitation folks may have experienced due to some technical difficulties with results. There was a problem with an Orange/Blue control placement as well.
All the results are below. Congratulations to everyone for tackling the challenging courses.
The good times at the event would not have been possible without the efforts of our course setters Donatas Ereminas, who designed the Northstar Sprint, and Greg Walker, who designed both the Middle and Long events at Burton Creek. Donatas and Greg both live in Truckee and have been active in past Ski-O events. These were their first Foot-O designs, and were very well-received. We will get more of the same in the future we hope.
Scott Novotny, our recently installed SF/NBay/Tahoe Event Coordinator, made first contact with each of the venues involved. He secured the main permit for the use of Burton Creek State Park, which made the event a "GO". He vetted courses and set out controls. He lifted things and he smiled often. Camping was arranged by Nancy Lindeman. Registration was wrangled by Greg Ehrensing. Jay Hann provided epunch support. They also smiled.
Amber Whitman of Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort provided expert logistical support to us there. Many thanks to Michelle Green, ranger at Burton Creek State Park, and to Amy Norman at the Tahoe City Public Utility District, for help arranging use of the Highland Community Center and parking lot.
Many people from our club (and GCO, and others) helped out on the days of the event, and before and after the event:
- Alex Finch, Bjorn Widerstrom, Bob Cooley, Damian Swift, Deron van Hoff, Evan Custer, Francois Leonard, Galina Shakhnovsky, Gary Kraght, George Minarik, Greg Ehrensing, Gwen Juha, Jeff Lanam, Jennifer Kerr, Joe Saba, Johanna Merriss, Judy Koehler, Kelly Wells, Leslie Minarik, Luc Poppe, Marie-Josee Parayre, Mark Blair, Marsha Jacobs, Mattias Vangbo, Mikkel Conradi, Olga Seredenko, Pierre Delforge, Shirley Donald, Steve Harrison, Syd Reader, Theo Verhoeven, Toby Ferguson, Werner Haag, and Wes Erck.
Anyone inadvertently left out will understand that my unconscious is grateful nevertheless (somewhere deep inside, I know who you are).
Comments About the Results
By (Sept. 28, 2010)
I know that it's an awful long time to wait for corrections to results, but the epunch crew was particularly challenged on the Tahoe weekend. We had difficulty downloading our results electronically. On the last day, runners were told to double punch to a back-up system that was being beta tested by the epunch group, but it was not explained that we were relying on that system for the final results, so many did not double punch.
A lot of splits had to be hand typed by yours truly and Mark Blair. I want to especially thank Mark for his yeoman work on trying to complete the computation of results for our first day at Burton Creek. There was a misplaced control on the Orange/Long Orange/Blue courses. It was later corrected. So early runners hunted for the bag, and later runners were able to find it successfully. We have software that will void a leg and average the results for the adjacent legs, but, due to technical difficulties, the information had to be hand typed into the server for computation.
On day 2 at Burton Creek, the control bags for #8 and #9 were mishung, and then later corrected. I didn't find out about this until after the event results had been posted. So we have also changed this to give credit to all Blue runners for any order of #8 and #9. This meant that there are no DNF's on Blue for Day 2.

Entering your Sprint route in RouteGadget:
Since there were no e-punch results for the Sprint, the event is set up using the "no results" mode, where participants need to enter their name, total time, and any cumulative splits that they might have taken. Note that if you are uploading a GPS track, you don't need to enter your total time or splits.
You can draw your route even if you didn't take any splits — just enter your name and total time. Note that RouteGadget requires cumulative splits. Both splits and total time need to be in MMMSS format. For example, 0:57 is entered as "57", 5min43s as "543", and 1hr12min32s as "7232". That's easy.
