Trail Orienteering Training Write-Up

The first event in the BAOC Trail Orienteering Training Series was held last Sunday at Tamarancho. The demo was free, and consisted of three controls. Most people did it before going out on their regular foot course.
There are no official results for the Trail Orienteering at Tamarancho last Sunday, as participants did their own scoring. Informally, about 25 people participated, with an average score of 1 (out of 3). Two people (that I am aware of) got all three controls correct: Nick Corsano and Jay Hann.
The three controls represented three different types of trail orienteering problems. But there was a common theme: Read the map, and determine which features are mapped and which are unmapped. A second (unintended) theme was: Use your compass! I am amazed by how many participants did not use a compass when making their selections.
Some participants were not aware that any trail or road not specifically marked as out of bounds can be legally navigated in trail orienteering. You are not restricted to the viewing stations when gathering information to make your selection.
Everyone had fun, and I heard many comments similar to "You got me this time, but I'll be back!"
