I want to thank everyone who helped make the Monte Bello/Skyline ridge event a success. This event had unusually high personnel requirements placed on us by the rangers, in addition to the remote start shuttling, which had me running all around to make sure everything was functioning properly. I apologize for not always being available to assist the volunteers, but I think everything got done well enough.

Trail Orienteering Training Write-Up

The second event in BAOC’s Trail Orienteering Training Series was held at Skyline Ridge. Nineteen people in total tried out the course. There were four controls, generally of intermediate difficulty. While these events are not officially scored, I gave the participants the opportunity to record their scores anonymously at the end of the course. Here were those results:
- Four correct: 3
- Three correct: 6
- Two correct: 5
- One correct: 2
- Zero correct: 1
It should be noted that the last few people went out after I had taken down control #1.
The majority of the participants had done Trail-O before. I did not get a lot of direct feedback, since most of the people continued forward along the trail to the main assembly area, and not back through the start. The people I did talk to afterwards, however, all seemed appreciative that the club is offering this type of event, and thought that the practice was helpful. Several, in spite of the heat, really had fun!
The existing map of Skyline Ridge was used without corrections, just scaled at 1:2500. Control #1 could have used a little refinement in the vegetation, but I believe that among the people who studied the control long enough to spot the ambiguity, most arrived at the same conclusion as the course setter. Recognition of unmapped features was key to solving two of the controls. The other two benefited from observing features not directly part of the control location. Hopefully, we are developing a bit of Trail-O expertise here in BAOC.
