Another great day at the Presidio National Park. We had over two hundred participants, down from last year because of JROTC rule changes at local schools. Nevertheless, the participants ranged from "due in 4 weeks" to age 86!
Some came with dogs, some with strollers, and of course the usual suspects—our core orienteers—were there. The Presidio orienteering event is held on National Orienteering Day to encourage newcomers to try this thinking-persons sport. We had many newcomers, and hopefully they will try another meet. Thanks to Nancy Lindeman for the finish-line goodies, and to Rex Winterbottom for sharing his four birthday cakes/pies with all.
The courses seemed to satisfy all. Control 108 (Orange #5, Long Orange #9) changed because the area was cleared in preparation for a view site. When I tagged the control location (and when it was vetted), it was forest and fight. When I went to hang the bag, it was open! I found a downed tree in about the right place, pointing in the right direction, so I didn’t need to revise the description. All were informed prior to running the courses. That’s the changing Presidio for you.
There was a little confusion around control 107 (Long Orange #8). This was set in a pit. There were several trails not well mapped that made this a bit of a challenge. Also, control 180 (LO #6) could have been more clearly mapped. The vetter mentioned these matters to me, but they didn’t make the final map corrections. Opportunities for improvement for next time.
Other then the above, everything worked well, and participants and volunteers said that they had a good time.
