Event Write-Up
By
The Bay Area suffered through a very dry winter in 2007, and as a result, the terrain was hard and fast at Point Pinole this year. For the first time ever, I had trouble driving some of the epunch poles deep enough into the ground when setting out controls the day before the event. The weather was also quite pleasant the day of the event, and as a result, we had a good crowd of enthusiastic orienteers in attendance. In particular, a large JROTC group from San Francisco showed up again this year, but now that I have learned to set a appropriately easy Yellow course for them, we got all the kids registered and through their courses without a hitch. The group of Hu, Huang, and Isaree from Washington HS won the 3.4 km course, with a time of 31:32. Other winners on the "non-sprint" courses were Jamie Caplinger on White, and Rick and Ann Norbutas on Orange.
Since Point Pinole was not the official BAOC sprint championships this year, I decided to experiment with a different format than in previous years. The chase was a "handicap race", with the slower runners starting first, and the faster runners trying to catch them. This made for a very interesting scene at the finish line, with unanticipated winners, and most people running harder than usual throughout the race, as they knew that faster runners were hot on their heels. Congratulations to the top three finishers Manfred Kopisch, Jason Hogan, and Stephanie Maclean.
To no one's surprise, Eric Bone had the fastest time on both the Prologue and Chase courses. He won the Prologue by over a minute (running 14:05 for the 2.9 km course), and although the nature of the Chase compressed the time gaps between runners substantially, Eric also won the 2.7 km Chase in an almost identical time of 14:06. Close behind Eric in the Chase were Francois Leonard at 14:12, and Martin Kunz at 14:18.
A big thank you to everyone who helped out at the event. Dennis Wildfogel and Greg Khanlarov vetted the courses before the event, which is a particularly important job in a sprint race. Others who worked in various capacities during the event (either pre-assigned, or off-the-cuff) were Harold and Penny DeMoss, Ruth Kadel, Trinka Gillis, Bjorn Widerstrom, Jeff Lanam, Evan Custer, Martin Kunz, Ev and Jean Beuerman, Alan Hauser, Peter Graham, Jason Hogan, and Russell Neilson. My apologies to anyone I have forgotten who stepped up to help.

Sprint Courses
The Point Pinole Chase Sprint is now also on RouteGadget. Use this link for an introduction, or go directly here (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi) to draw your route.
By default, the animation shows the Chase as an independent race. To run the Chase as it happened, with the competitors started from slowest to fastest based on their Prologue results, you need to turn off the "Mass start" option next to the "View animation" button.
Special thanks to Ruth Kadel, who did most of the splits file editing so that both animations would run correctly on RouteGadget. If only we had used a regular start unit instead of control #0...
I adjusted Evan's start time to be as if he had run the Chase as part of the "handicap race" format. Evan had run the course earlier on his own so that he could help with e-punch.
