Event Write-Up

Our annual fall event at Morgan Territory was marked by crazy weather and challenging courses. At 7:30 A.M., Livermore valley was shrouded in fog but the skies above Morgan Territory were completely blue and sunny. This changed by 8:15, and for most of the day we had varying degrees of dense or light fog, clouds, cold, and wind, with things clearing up gradually. By the time we closed the courses and picked up the controls the blue sky had returned.
Some of the early runners may have been disadvantaged by the dense fog, leading to a condition we call, in technical orienteering terms, "not knowing where the heck you are." Later runners will have to find a different excuse.
We had a good turnout, including a lot of first-time orienteers and young people, as well as the usual collection of crafty veterans (it being veteran's day after all). Many of the school-aged orienteers signed up for our COOL juniors series.
On the White course, we had a lot of families and COOL competitors, all of whom did a great job on the course. The top finishers were Julia Doubson, Hannah Kopisch, and Karina Masalkovaite. On Yellow, the top finishers were Daniel Kopisch, Philipp Kopisch, and Kate Samuelson.
Topping the Orange course were Wayne Caplinger, Harold DeMoss, and Thierry Le Gall. The demanding Long Orange course was won by Amit Katz, followed by John Turner and Louis Lederer.
Leading the finishers on Brown were Dennis Wildfogel, George Minarik, and Greg Ehrensing. Topping the Green course were Francois Leonard, Chuck Spalding, and Tony Pinkham.
Finishing at the top of Red were Steve Gregg, Matthias Kohler, and Bruce Wolfe. Benjamin Legg legged out the victory on Blue, followed by Dag Ainsoo and Greg Khanlarov.
My favorite comment so far on RouteGadget (http://baoc.org/gadget/cgi/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=112&kieli=) is "What was Bob thinking?!", referring to our expert course setter Bob Cooley, and his addition of a near cliff-climb leg on the Green, Red, and Blue courses. Most runners took a pretty direct route on this leg and seemed to appreciate the challenge. They may have been buoyed by their visit, on the third control, to what is evidently some kind of BAOC shrine, a TV set, rusted nearly beyond recognition. When I vetted the courses, I thought it was a piece of junk that we should haul out of the woods. I later learned that I was quite wrong about that, and, like a returning comet, this TV set has been observed periodically on Morgan Territory courses for the last twenty or more years. Bob told me that it's orbit sometimes changes, and a few participants wondered if next time it might be found somewhere other than in the midst of a poison oak patch.
This event would not have been possible if not for the committed effort of several volunteers. (Please contact me if I forgot to acknowledge anyone below.)
Bob Cooley set excellent courses, placed all the controls and water himself, and, as mapping director, created all of the maps and control description sheets. Rosemary Johnson directed the e-punch team that included Jim Fish, Evan Custer, and Tony Pinkham. Martin Kunz single-handedly took care of registration from 9 A.M. until past 11:30, when we found Terry Farrah to relieve him. Terry also worked starts, as did Alan Houser, David Meredith, Margaret Longstreth, and the dedicated Mikkel Conradi, who volunteered despite being on crutches.
Peter Graube and Rex Winterbottom did a great job as parking attendants at Indian Springs Ranch. Toby Ferguson delivered several beginner clinics from 9:30 to 11, which were well received by our many newcomers. Marina Keating and Margaret Longstreth arrived early and set up the Start and Finish areas. Steve Haas helped with a number of tasks (I forget what exactly), as did Marina. Harold and Penny DeMoss coordinated the control pick-up and, as the cold winds picked up, erected an "emergency shelter" around shivering Martin at registration. Other volunteers made an emergency repair of the battered download tent.
Controls were picked up by Nancy Lindeman, Jim Fish, Steve Haas, Luc Poppe, Theo Verhoven, Toby and Cameron Ferguson, Margaret Longstreth, and Mark Blair. Mark supplied the equipment, and Alan Houser and Jay Hahn stayed around to collect it for upcoming events. Mark also provided advice and coordinated with Debra, the owner of Indian Springs Ranch, regarding parking. The club is immensely grateful to Debra for her generosity in working with us on this event.
