What a beautiful day for orienteering at Las Trampas! The weather was cool, but it was sunny and dry—the only sprinkles of rain arrived just after we had gathered up the last equipment. Lots of people came out to take advantage of this weather too. Nearly 200 people in 157 groups going out on the courses! Jay Hann’s interscholastic league, BAOC COOL, had another excellent turnout, with 14 juniors competing and doing very well against much older competitors (two firsts and eleven top-ten finishers over four courses).
The biggest turnout was on White, where Cub Scout Packs 474 and 53 combined to bring 15 groups. A few unfortunate DNFs occurred on White, where it appeared that a few groups became so excited seeing the finish chute that they ran right past the GO control! Oh well, they found all the rest and made it home safely. The always remarkable Julia Doubson of COOL placed first on White in just under 15 minutes.
On the Yellow course, first and second places went to the Kopisch brothers (also COOL members), with Daniel coming in ahead of Philipp. Adam Doti won Orange by a wide margin, and his adventure racer buddies say it’s time to try a harder course! Andreas Nguyen and Susan Bower came in the next two slots on orange.
There was some excitement on the advanced courses too, with several orienteers taking advantage of the shorter distances to move up one class for the day. Francois Leonard captured first on Blue with Andrejus Masalkovas close behind, but some usual Red-course runners like Tapio and Matthias didn’t leave them much room to breath! Gavin Wyatt-Mair was top placer on Brown, Gary Carpenter on Green, and Deron van Hoff on Red.
Unfortunately, runners weren’t the only things that switched courses. Our apologies to any Red runners confused to find a control labeled #46 when expecting #49—and any Blue runners who confused by the converse. Overall, perhaps the trickiest control of all the advanced courses was #1, which gave just a taste of Las Trampas’s infamous gullies. Otherwise, the running was fast and furious.
All of the fun was made possible by a lot of excellent volunteers. These included Derek Maclean, Steph Maclean, David Meredith, Greg Ehrensing, Rex Winterbottom, Tomar Maymon, Carl Williams and his family, Gavin Wyatt-Mair, Steve Gregg, Harold DeMoss, Penny DeMoss, Mark Blair, Nancy Lindeman, Peter Graube, Jay Hann, Toby Ferguson, Cameron Ferguson, Rosemary Johnson, Evan Custer, Jim Fish, Bob Cooley, and James Wilson.
These helpful folks made a great combination. There were experienced hands who could organize a meet in their sleep and newer volunteers who stepped up to help out for the first time. We appreciated your help tremendously. The support of these volunteers made it possible for the first-time event directors to relax a bit and even enjoy ourselves! We encourage anyone who hasn’t volunteered before to give it a shot—at the minimum, you’ll get to meet some other great people.
