Two weeks before the orienteering meet at Joe Grant Park, the hills were covered with snow. A concerned member asked whether the meet would be held if there would still be snow on the ground. (Of course!) As it was, the weather turned sunny and beautiful. A smattering of wildflowers were blossoming. Over 230 people participated.
This year's courses featured a remote start for the advanced courses. They were self-starting, thanks to the miracle of e-punching.
The White course was 2.5 km, 40 m climb, with 11 controls. Geoffrey and MinJung Lew came in first, followed by Philipp Kopisch. John and Margaret Erickson edged out Tricia and Scott Strutner by three seconds for third.
Yellow was 3.4 km, 55 m climb, with 14 controls. Anja Kahampaeae came in first, Rod and Mark Sinks came in second, and Jim and Carolyn Sacchetti came in third.
The Orange course was 4.8 km, 185 m climb, with 12 controls. Jaakko and Jukka Karras came in first, with Fedor Karpelevitch coming in 48 seconds later. Jon Taylor and Andrew Peterson finished third.
The Long Orange course was 6.2 km, 175 m climb, with 18 controls. Marie-Josee Parayre came in first. Stephen Harrison came in second. Tono Estrada placed third
Brown was 4.7 km, 145m climb, with 13 controls. Steve Gregg blazed in a decisive first. William Strauss came in second, edging out George Minarik by 34 seconds.
Green was 5.7 km, 195 m climb, with 15 controls. Kent Ohlund took first place, with Bob Cooley in second, and Rich Parker in third.
The Red course was 6.9 km, 250m climb, with 16 controls. Like last year, Tapio Karras took top honors, with Matthias Kohler in second. Manfred Kopisch took third.
Blue was 8.1 km, 320m climb, with 18 controls. The top five finishers in Blue beat the winning Red time, despite being 1.2 km longer with two more controls—an awesome performance. Eric Bone blazed to first, followed by Martin Kunz in second, and Jean-Charles Baritaux in third.
The event could not have occurred without the help of many volunteers. Dean French and Jim Fish for set the beginning courses and tended many chores.
