Event Write-Up
By Rex Winterbottom
I'm glad I had plenty of experience directing and course setting events, because I could have had a heart attack scrambling to get things running. Thanks to the early helpers, we got the event going okay, but there were many challenges to be faced this day. A combination of complications left the ED-CS team doing many things at the last minute. The rain didn't help either!
On the positive side, what great, helpful people we have in the club, like Steve Gregg and Ben Legg, who stepped up in the beginning to help us put out the White, Yellow, and Orange pie-plate controls, and then helped with starts later, and also helped with setup. There was a great spirit of cooperation amongst the seasoned club members to get the event going and running for the attendees.
The rain couldn't dampen the spirits of all the participants who enjoyed Vladimir's interesting courses. The Sprint brought out some fast navigating, led by James Scarborough, Martin Kunz, and Vadim Masalkov. The course kept you thinking and map-reading the whole way through—a nice challenge for the experienced crowd. On Long Orange, the trio of Donato Polignone, Adam Doti, and Adam Armijo bested the rest. Jennifer Klafin won Orange over Greg Ehrensing and junior Valeria Fedyk. Vladimir did a nice job of creating interesting Orange legs, many with optimal off-trail route choices, not an easy thing to execute at Golden Gate Park. Brad and Lisa Melton led Richard Frankland, and Bill and Dayna Wiebalk, on Yellow. And top honors on the White course go to Fedor and Galina Karpelevitch, and the Eureka scout troop 2661 teams.
Thanks to the many helpers!

Course Setter's Comment on Maps
I must apologize for running out of White, Yellow, and Long Orange maps. I had planned for about 80 participants, and about 130 showed up despite the pouring rain and a Saturday on a holiday weekend.
If your map was taken for reuse, and you would like one, send me an and it will be brought to the Sunol and/or Stanford events.
