Well over 100 people came out to one of our smaller, but more conveniently located parks, to enjoy gorgeous weather and fast orienteering. First-time course setter Frank Markowitz laid out White, Yellow, and Motala courses.
The Motala consisted of three loops, with competitors having the option of running 1, 2, or 3 loops. Those doing more than one loop got a new map (showing the entire park but with different controls) for each loop. This format allows us to generate courses of moderate length in a small park that would otherwise support only shorter courses. To make things a little more challenging, the park’s extensive trail network was left off the maps for the second and third loops. The majority of the Motala participants chose to complete all three loops.
The relatively flat, open terrain combined with the good weather resulted in some fast times on all of the courses. On White, the team of Adele Ho, Suhl Chiu, and Karen Kressenberg finished first with a time of 25:07, edging out Bronwen Caplinger by 31 seconds. On Yellow, Alex Finch finished in a quick 18:37, a margin of more than 3 minutes over second-place finisher Daniel Kopisch. On the 3-loop Motala, the first three finishers were separated by just one minute and three seconds, with Francois Leonard edging out Dag Ainsoo and Martin Kunz. Francois covered the 7.7 km in 38:01.
Other highlights of the event:
- A large number of participating families, running together or separately.
- One of those families—the Wailes—having a spirited competition between the parents team and the sons team—twice.
- A visiting Israeli (Daniel Szoke, who is a regular orienteer at home) teaming up with his brother Noam.
- Many people choosing to run second courses.
- Hearing only positive comments on Frank’s courses.
As usual, volunteers were critical to a successful event. Course-setter Markowitz had lots of help from Brian Kirshner, both in creating the courses and in setting out controls early Sunday morning. Bob Cooley did his usual fine job with the maps, Gary Kraght and Martin Kunz handled registration, and Chuck Spalding gave beginners’ clinics. The team of helpers who willingly pitched in on starts, finishes, results, set-up and tear-down, and control pick-up included Gela Siganevich and her sons, Jim Fish, Nancy Lindeman, Kelly Wells, Alan Glendinning, Martin Kunz, Bill and Teruko Follette, Werner Haag, Galena Shakhnovsky, and Ido Green. A big "Thank you" to all of them.

(Running one course did not provide a significant benefit toward running a second course, so people who did that are simply noted in the results, instead of being listed separately.)
