Event Write-Up

The weather at Point Pinole this year provided a prelude for what would turn out to be an all-time record-setting month of March, in terms of both days of rain and total amount of rainfall. It could have been much worse, though. The Prologue was held in almost perfect weather conditions, and the rain didn't start coming down in any significant quantity until near the end of the Chase. Control pickup afterwards was an entire different story, though, as a big storm blew in at around 1 PM and it rained hard for the rest of the afternoon. Big thanks to Mark Blair, Gary Carpenter, Nancy Lindeman, and Jim Fish, who braved the elements to bring all the bags and epunch units back in.
Point Pinole was specifically planned to be BAOCs first-ever "all epunch" local event, with epunch even being used on the White and Yellow courses. The results of this experiment would help us decide if we want to make other local events "all epunch" in the future. The threatening weather turned that into a non-issue, though, as there were a grand total of 15 signups on the White and Yellow course combined. The JROTC groups that usually attend the event stayed home as well. Look for next year's Point Pinole event to be all epunch again, with hopefully better weather and better attendance on the beginner's courses.
Most of our diehard advanced course runners showed up for the sprints, though. With Dan Stoll-Hadayia and Martin Kunz both missing this year, Eric Bone was the heavy favorite coming into the event, and he did not disappoint. Even with a 20 second mistake on control 10, Eric still blitzed the 2.7 km Prologue in 12 minutes flat — well under my estimated winning time. Eric continued to increase his lead over the pack during the Chase, to win the event by a margin of over a minute. Francois Leonard had an excellent second run to finish in second place overall, and Syd Reader took third place. Penny DeMoss once again won the women's competition by a large margin.
There was also a Junior Sprint Championship, held for the first time this year. The threatening weather perhaps kept attendance low on this course as well, but the juniors who did compete appreciated the opportunity to win a medal on an appropriate course for them. Congratulations to Daniel Kopisch, Tristan Delforge, and Garrett Pitsenbarger on the boys side, and to Kristen Pitsenbarger and Joanne Leadbetter for the girls.
A big thank you to everyone who helped out at the event. Dwight Freund, Joan Roos, and Ev and Jean Beuermann all vetted the courses before the event. I have already mentioned the bag pickup folks, who endured the heavy rains in the afternoon. Others who worked in various capacities during the event (either pre-assigned, or off-the-cuff) were Harold and Penny DeMoss, Terry Farrah, Kelly Wells, Vicki Woolworth, Frank Markowitz, Marina Keating, Jeff Lanam, Trinka Gillis, Gary Kraght, and James Wilson. My apologies to anyone I have forgotten who stepped up to help.
