Event Write-Up
By Gavin Wyatt-Mair
We had overcast, unseasonably cool weather, a great turnout, and plenty of fun at this year's Briones event and 14th Bay Area Scout Orienteering Championships.
There were 637 pre-registered scouts from 60 troops, over 50 adult advisors, and 115 BAOC participants, for a total of over 800 runners. Maybe a record?
There was a controlled burn that took place on the Friday before the meet, and it did encroach on the courses. However, it did not affect the event negatively, so it was no problem.
Thank you!
We would like to thank the East Bay Regional Park District and the Briones Park rangers for their support. The Park Rangers were particularly helpful with parking, access, and advice, and we are very grateful to them. The scouts would like to thank BAOC for sponsoring the Scout-O event and helping scouting out. Thanks also to all the parents and scout leaders who took the time to bring their scouts to a day of orienteering.
Some Special Thanks
This year, Alan Houser took up the task of designing the Scout courses. This takes a lot of time, especially in Briones where options are limited, and Alan did a fine job. Thanks Alan — it looks like you are ready for the big time!
As has now become customary, e-punch on all courses provides a level of automation that is indispensable for such a big event. Jay Hann's fancy software was able to calculate the scores in short order again, based on the e-punch output (thanks E-punch team!), so we had minimal delays in getting results.
The start for many troops was delayed by as much as 35 minutes, probably because some troops jumped the queue. So the afternoon score-o only started at 2:14 pm, and finished at 3:24 pm. Despite the delay, the awards ceremony took place soon after 4 pm, earlier than most prior years, and this is a tribute to the efficiency of e-punch and Jay Hann's results calculator. Thanks, e-punch team, and thanks, Jay!
Penny and Harold DeMoss were again awesome: They planned the start area, erected it, ran it, dismantled it, and worked so hard they did not get to run a course. Then they picked up controls on Monday. Many thanks!
To All Our Helpers
Thank you very much. With such a large attendance, help was the most essential element of the meet, and you all did a wonderful job! To those whom I have left out (and I'm sure I have, since there were so many ad-hoc volunteers), please accept my thanks, too. And of course, thanks to my family (Nina, Kelsey, Wendy) for all their help and patience — typing, stuffing packets, telephone calls, mailings, recruiting, results, and putting up with the disruption.
Once again, BAOC members excelled and showed the club's true colors with all their help and encouragement. Here is this year's list of helpers with caveat: I simply couldn't record all the helpers and help that was given, so please, if your name is omitted, we are still very very grateful and I apologize for the omission.

It's a repeat: Congratulations to our 2006 Bay area Scout Orienteering Champions: Girl Scout Troop 793 (Polish Scouting) from San Francisco, with their second-in-a-row convincing win. Go Girls!!!!
Second place, and first Boy Scout troop, went to Troop 273 from Orinda. Third place, and second place Boy Scouts, went to Troop 494 from Cupertino. Troop 24 from Berkeley came in fourth, and collared the third place Boy Scout Troop award.
The top Junior Scout troop award goes to Pack 210 from Walnut Creek, who overtook Pack 200 from Lafayette in the afternoon.
Scouts are strongly encouraged to go to the RouteGadget (http://baoc.org/wiki/RouteGadget) and enter their routes to compare how they ran on a head-to-head basis.
The competition was organized in two parts:
- In the morning, there was individual competition according to skill level. Four courses were offered: Course 1 (White), Course 2 (Yellow), Course 3 (Yellow-Orange), and Course 4 (Orange). Scouts were to compete in groups. The top three groups on each course were champions, receiving medals and certificates for their efforts.
- In the afternoon, there was a one-hour Score-O. Each control's value was its number. The goal: Plan a good route, and get as many as you can.
The totals for each troop were computed from a combination of individual morning results and Score-O. Morning results were weighted based on time, and afternoon results were weighted based on number of correct controls found, with a lateness penalty.
The undisputed Bay Area Scout Orienteering Champion for 2006 is Martin McDonald from Troop 24 in Berkeley, who won Course 4, a tough Orange course, in 84:00. In second place on course 4 was Michael Rodriguez of Troop 905 from Dublin just 3 minutes behind, and third place goes to Charles Mighetto of Troop 24.
On Course 1 (the White course), first place was won by Daniel Carpentier Balough and Joseph Rufini of Pack 800 in Alamo. Second place goes to James Pelster, Joe Kaput, and Eric Tubbs of Pack 294 in Pleasant Hill, and third place to Chris Yerina and Steven Silino of Troop 263/803 in Danville.
Devin McNally and Patrick Lucey of Troop 465 in Concord won on Course 2 (Yellow). Second place went to Eric Hogue and Ian Riley of Troop 95 in Fresno, and third place to Adrian of GS troop 793 in San Francisco.
Course 3 (Yellow-Orange) was won by Ryan DiBiassio and Kenny Durrell of Troop 66 in Davis. David Pulchalski of GS Troop 793 in San Francisco placed 2nd, while Natalie also of GS troop 793 in San Francisco was third.
Peter Hendricks of Troop 1811 in Walnut Creek collared top honors on the Adult course. Dave Shaw of Troop 24 from Berkeley placed second, while David Gallegos of Troop 14 in Albany ran third. Since this was for bragging rights only, Peter Hendricks gets to be the biggest bragger — well done!
Troop scores are shown below, followed by the individual results. Time splits for the morning courses are also available here (http://www.obasen.nu/winsplits/online/en/show_event.asp?id=6880).
Scout patches and awards (top three teams on each course) were distributed at the meet. Those who weren't at the awards ceremony may claim their awards by contacting me. If anyone did not receive a patch, as well as a course patch, please also contact me: 925-934-6567 or e-mail .
I have some lost property. If you need it, please send me an e-mail describing your item, and we will arrange a pickup. If no-one claims it within two years, I will donate it to Goodwill.
