Event Write-Up
By Nick Corsano, Event Director
The blistering heat wave of the previous week had dissipated, and nearly ideal conditons greeted about 156 orienteers (and a similar number of Canada geese) who spent the day criss-crossing little Bayfront Park. Brad Wetmore's White, Yellow, and three-loop Motala explored every nook and cranny of the park, while my Trail-O made a serene circuit of the periphery.
On White, Kevin Fehlmann and Heather Zischka finished first by nearly five minutes, and then did the entire three-loop Motala as a second course. Karla Smith and her young daughters Jenna and Rachel finished second. On Yellow, Lisa Knowles had the fastest time at the head of a group of four teams separated by a total of 29 seconds. Alex Solomatnikov took second.
The Motala consisted of three short loops, and allowed competitors to decide at the end of each loop whether to go on or not. The first two loops used a map with all roads and trails removed. Joe Scarborough took first among those who did the one-loop version as their first course. Beth Dixon was the first woman. Among two-loop runners, Dennis Wildfogel ran to a convincing win. Jennifer Kerr was top woman.
The third loop was a "Fog-O". The whole map was gray, except for small patches surrounding the control circles, forcing runners to play by intuition or sense of smell (or maybe bearings and pace counts). Still, that didn't slow down many of the club's top runners very much. Mikkel Conradi finished first, with Mattias Eriksson second and Francois Leonard third. Janet Stein and Phillip Hoare were the top mixed team, just ahead of the first solo female, Margaret Longstreth.
Trail Orienteering is designed to challenge the orienteer's map reading skill and powers of observation, not speed and stamina. With eleven controls (including a final timed control), scores were quite good. Joe Maffei is the champion, with ten correct answers, while nine people scored nine right. In that group, Mattias Eriksson matched his second place in the Motala by solving the timed control in an amazing five seconds. Bob Cooley was almost as quick, taking nine seconds and finishing third.
Volunteer Thanks
Brad and I want to thank all the people whose efforts made for a smooth-running and successful event. Chuck Spalding arranged the permit; Bob Cooley printed the maps; Donna Leaf printed and laminated the cool Trail-O placards; Mark Rice and Jim Waite helped with setup; Jean and Ev Beuerman and Esther Heller handled registration; Bill Straka, Jeff Lanam and Meg Gerstner gave a bunch of beginners clinics; Jeanne Chisholm, Steve McElfresh, Eric Ramberg, Anna Brunzell, Peter Graham and Russell Neilson staffed the start; Meg Gerstner, Matthias Kohler and Alan Houser ran the finish/map exchange stations; Megan Madsen hosted the Trail-O timed control; Trinka Gillis and Jim Fish worked e-punch; Jim Fish and the start/finish crews took down and packed up; Mike Fleishman, Theo Verhoeven and Mattias Eriksson (along with Brad) collected the 86 control bags plus e-punch units, water and cups, stakes, viewing stations and punches. A final thank-you goes to Bayfront head ranger Gary Smith for always being helpful and cooperative, even opening the park gate an hour early for the two of us!
