Event Write-Up

By Rob Clima

It was another beautiful day at Shell Ridge, not too hot, which it can be in September. There were about 125 participants. The Blue course had the most people. There is a lot of open space, so it was not that technical, but the climb and length should have made up for that. There were not a lot of people on the White and Yellow courses, but the ones who were looked like they had fun. Pack 210 Den 17 tried the Brown course and finished, which was a great accomplishment considering how young they were. I don’t see too many kids their age who could have finished, so congratulations.

The White course was won by Jimmy Chung, 18 minutes in front of the second place team of Will, Jane, and Matt. Thirty-three participants plus one Girl Scout group tried the Yellow course. Marina Keating took first on the Yellow course, followed by James and Zion Wilson who were 22 minutes in front of the next team. Harold DeMoss was the only person under an hour, taking first place, on the Orange course, while Marina Keating came in second, finishing a little over an hour. The Brown course was won by George Minarik, who once again was the only one to finish under an hour, with Kelly Wells coming in second and Joe Maffei taking third. The Green course also had only one person coming in under an hour, it was Bob Cooley. Evan Custer came in just over an hour, with Bjorn Widerstrom taking third. The Red course seemed to be too similar to the Blue course, and only two people ran the course. Martin Kunz took first on the Blue course by 8:30. Doug Stein took second, with Vladimir Gusiatnikov taking third.

It was the first time Laura and I directed an event or set any courses above Yellow. It was quite a learning experience for us. We would like to say thanks for all the help we got. Dan Greene was a big help. We were getting pretty nervous as the event got closer, and Dan e-mailed us to see how we were doing and helped mentor us. He vetted the courses and helped with a few changes without making us feel like we didn’t know what we were doing. James Wilson and the rest of the registration crew were great; they came in, setup, and we did not have to worry about a thing. The same with Trinka Gillis and the e-punch crew. Even though Laura and I have vetted courses, and have set Whites and Yellows, we have never helped with starts so it was nice to have George Minarik helping us there. Steve Gregg gave classes, which I know I would be confusing the people more then helping them. Not only did Bob Cooley print all the maps, but he helped out with one of our big mistakes by printing out the course notes right there at the event. The Boy Scouts from Troop ? helped set up, and helped with finishes and a few other things. Jamie McKeegan and her friend Jannette were a big help at the finishes. They did a great job making sure everyone got back.

Thanks to Ranger Dan Bylin we were able to use Laura’s truck to put out the water, along with some controls. He was also a big help in making sure things were going okay. Not only were we worried about getting all the controls out, we thought we might be out there for days picking controls up, so a real big thanks to Harold DeMoss for setting up the pick-up and Penny DeMoss for helping find people to help pick up. Thanks to Francois Leonard, Martin Kunz, Penny, and Harold for picking up controls. One more special thanks to Harold and Penny for helping out with a lot of other things we had forgotten to do, or weren’t quite sure how to do. If we missed anyone, it is just because we do not know all the names that well, and we had a whole lot of help, so thanks to anyone we may have missed.
