Preliminary Event Write-Up
By Jim Waite
The Tenth Annual Golden Goat is over. Everyone has safely made it out of the woods. The winners were Martin Kunz and Penny DeMoss, for the Goat; and Pierre Delforge and Gina Christopher, for the Kid. Full results are below. They are subject to corrections.
The Goat course was too long. The course setter's estimate for the best time was correct. Under ideal conditions, Vladimir guessses it would have taken Martin about 1 hour and 54 minutes. Martin skipped Controls 6 and 7, which was the most popular skip.
The course setter's best skip is 3 and 15, unchanged after the race. Both of those saved major climb. A straight-line route from 3 to 4 is 130 m of climb.
The Goat statistics updated for the route taken by the winner are 10.9 km, 17 controls. The climb is being updated, but is believed to be in the high 900s (i.e., the 6, 7 skip saved barely any climb).
However, the course was indeed too long. Vladimir thinks he should have aimed, and future course setters should strive, to set a Goat course that most of the Green and Red club runners are able to finish in under 3 hours. This was not accomplished.
The first half of the Goat course was enjoyed by most. However, the major challenge came in the second half with all the climb. Vladimir thinks that it would have been ideal to have the finish around Guadalupe Reservoir, but this would have required a shuttle back to the parking.
The course setter believes that Control 3 was the best Kid skip.
Here is the order of top Goat runners at two intermediate points in the race, with some approximate times.
After Control 5, first major trail junction:
1 Mattias Vangbo 35' 2 Roy Malone 35' 3 Thorsten Graeve 35' 4 Steve Gregg 35' 5 Martin Kunz 36' 6 Russell Neilson 36' 7 Steve Haas 37' 8 Mattias Eriksson 37'
At Control 10:
1 Martin Kunz 68:53 2 Matthias Kohler 77' 3 Penny DeMoss 80' 4 Roy Malone 84' 5 Mattias Vangbo 86' 6 Steve Gregg 86' 7 Mattias Eriksson 87' 8 Kent Öhlund 89' 9 Thorsten Graeve 90' 10 Andrejus Masalkovas 94' 11 Russell Neilson 12 Wendell Doman 13 Lehigh, Jaehn 14 Peter Graham 15 Mark Blair 16 Tapio Karras
There will be a full writeup, but we cannot promise it before Thanksgiving. Courses will be on Attackpoint before then.
The time limit applied to official finishers was four hours. A late starter on the Goat is listed twice in the Results, once with his actual time, the other, with the official time.
