Morgan Territory Results

November 21, 1999

by Mark Blair, meet director

After a week of rainy weather, which was still soaking the landscape as I put out controls on the afternoon before the event, the skies over Morgan Territory Regional Preserve broke into a cloudless blue smile the next morning, turning November 21 into a gorgeous, although somewhat chilly, autumn day. Even the leftover mud wasn't TOO bad (or so I've been told).

Some 172 adventure-hungry folks, including many Boy and Girl Scouts, came out to enjoy the day and help us commemorate the last time that Bob Cooley's exquisitely handcrafted little map of this East Bay park, in use since 1982, will be used in a major BAOC event. The usual White, Yellow, and Orange recreational courses were provided. For the advanced crowd there were short and long versions of Phantom Line-O, an unusual variety of orienteering in which competitors followed a line on the map to find controls, some of which were "phantom controls" that didn't even exist!

Recreational Courses

On the White Course, Tim Moran ran through the 6 controls and 1.6 km in a spectacular 12:38. That's just a hair more than 2 minutes per control! (And that's not all this fellow did, as you'll see below). Nipping at Tim's heels was BAOC "favorite son" Malcolm Wyatt-Mair, who blazed through in 13:16. The Andrews/Hansen/McNell group of 5 scouts captured third place with a time of 18:17.

Apparently only just warming up on his first run, White Course winner Tim Moran returned to whip through the Yellow Course's 8 controls and 2.6 km in a snappy 29:25. That made him the winner of the Yellow Course, too. Finishing in second place on Yellow were George and Charlotte Dean, who broke one hour to complete the course in 57:53. Peter Rathmann and Jeff Cower crossed the finish line in just over one hour with a time of 63:22 to place third.

Shawn Larsen, a BAOC regular, made short work of the Orange Course's 3.9 km and 11 controls, completing the course with a winning time of 52:30. Rob Gendreau also made it through in less than an hour, with a time of 59:22, to capture second place. Erin Krueger finished in third place with a time of 65:32. It should be noted that Tim Moran, who had already run - and won - both the White and Yellow courses, ran and completed the Orange Course in a respectable 120:39, making this his third successful run of the day. This may be a BAOC record!

The Phantom Line-O

The challenge of the Phantom Line-O experiment was to design a course with a level of technical and physical difficulty that would not cause the greater demands of line navigation to be overwhelming. I was pleased from the results that this balance was seemingly achieved. There were several considerations: All "real" (non-phantom) controls were placed on features that were very well defined within the surrounding terrain. All but a few of these were features typical of an Orange course. The line was restricted almost everywhere to open, fairly runnable terrain with no "killer climbs". Great pains were taken to minimize the "bingo" element. For instance, a boulder was used as a real or phantom feature only if the line was traversing a region of relatively isolated boulder groups or was crossing a line of boulders at an approximate right angle rather than running parallel to the boulder line.

Happily, the results were just about what I expected. The great majority of Phantom Line-O runners missed only 2 or fewer of the real controls. On the Long course, as a matter of fact, only 3 competitors missed more than 2. The results of these courses are ordered in three different ways: (1) by number of real controls missed or inappropriately punched, then by elapsed time; (2) by elapsed time; (3) by elapsed time, with 15 minutes added for each real control missed or inappropriately punched. The third method was used to determine official competitive placements. Comparison of the 3 lists for each course reveals some interesting tradeoffs between speed and navigational accuracy:

On the Short Phantom Line-O Course, winner Jonas Libell missed 2 controls but whizzed through the 5.1 km and 11 real controls in a mere 62:32, so that even with a 30-minute penalty, he still placed first with an adjusted time of 92:32. Harold DeMoss moved along at a very good clip and only missed 1 control to place second with a time of 84:19 and an adjusted time of 99:19. Evan Custer moved a little faster than Harold but missed 1 more control than Harold, capturing third place with a time of 78:13 and an adjusted time of 108:13.

On the Long Phantom Line-O Course, the undisputed winner at the top of all 3 ordered lists was Neeme Loorits. Neeme zoomed through all 7.2 km, 14 real controls, and 19 phantom controls of this course in just 68:44, finding all the real controls. This was a spectacular accomplishment and provides a farewell blaze of glory as Neeme returns to his native Estonia. The next 3 finishers, Dan Stoll-Hadayia, Steve Gregg, and Gary Carpenter, also found all the real controls, finishing the course with close times of 83:41, 84:57, and 89:37. Thorsten Graeve actually ran the Long Course just 7 minutes behind Neeme, but unfortunately missed 1 control, placing fifth with a time of 75:47 and an adjusted time of 90:47. Also worth noting is Eric Rosenzweig, who was one of the 6 competitors who found all the real controls on the Long Course. Eric has been running advanced courses in BAOC for only a little more than one year (I think), so his perfect score in this very difficult form of navigation is quite an accomplishment.

The following ordinal numbers on the Phantom Line-O control description sheet (i.e., the numbers in column 1) correspond to those control points that actually had control markers (i.e., those that were not "phantoms"): 3, 5, 6, 8, 11, 13, 16, 19, 22, 23, 24, 28, 30, 32.

Want to see where all the controls were - real and phantom? Check out this course map (thanks, Bob!). Real controls are colored blue; phantoms are pink. Warning: it's a big file (511k), so if you have a slow connection....

Thanks!

There is nothing I can say to express how impressed I was with the volunteers that made this event such a success. Of all the people I contacted to ask for help, not one of them declined. NOT ONE. Here's the list of heroes: Steve Gregg and Gary Carpenter handled all Phantom Line-O starts. Nancy Lindeman ran the starts for the White, Yellow, and Orange courses. Patty Clemo took the early shift at the Finish line. Aileen "Abby" Abernathy provided beginner's clinics, including a clinic that might have drawn the largest audience in BAOC history. Bless the heart of Julie Wells, who singlehandedly checked the punch cards of all competitors, including the tedious task of figuring out which real controls each Line-O competitor missed. Thanks as usual to Kelly Wells and Harold and Penny DeMoss for control pickup, and an additional thanks to Greg Lee, who picked up the most distant controls. Aimee Grimes and Vivian Lee did their usual efficient job of handling the crowds at the Registration.

Finally, I'd like to give special recognition to my event co-director Bob Cooley. Bob set the White, Yellow, and Orange courses. He also worked the Finish line and computed finish times. And of course it was Bob who, all by himself, field-checked and drafted the unique map of Morgan Territory Regional Preserve that we now retire after 17 years of quality service. But don't be sad. A new map of Morgan Territory that will cover more than twice the area of the old one is under construction. If all goes according to plan, we will all return to use this map at an A-meet to be hosted by BAOC some time in 2001. See you there!
