About 218 people came out and ran 138 courses at the first Calero event in over 1.5 years. Because of the hard ground, the advanced courses were kept on the short side, but the winning times were not far below the recommended range. It was a good opportunity to move up one level. Below are the complete results. The weather was cool but the first rainstorm of the season held off until everyone had finished. Unfortunately most of the Start-O results were lost in the rain, which also soaked the control pickup crew.
The event ran smoothly with the exception of one boy who was separated from his group almost at the finish, refused help, and eventually retraced his steps all the way back to the parking lot. One vetting streamer was left on the Blue/Green courses on an incorrect, unused boulder, which caused confusion for some; I apologize for not removing it before the start. One Blue control bag fell and was flat on the ground until Steve Gregg fixed it (thanks); I hope this didn't affect too many people.
Newcomer Parag Gupta won the White course and followed with a third place on the Yellow. The Perichetty family edged out two groups from Scout Pack 484 for second on White. Chapman McPherson won Yellow with a fast time of 40:24, followed by Pat & Joe Donovan, still 10 minutes ahead of the rest of the competition. David Bunsey took Orange with a 10-minute lead over the Donohue group and Erin Kruger, followed by the course-setter's visiting brother 9 minutes later.
Bjorn Widerstrom edged out Chuck Spalding by just a few minutes on Brown, well ahead of the rest of the pack. Penny DeMoss blazed through Green to win 7 minutes ahead of Dennis Wildfogel, followed by a close race for third with Hanu Harma edging George Minarik by 56 seconds. Kelly Wells excelled on Red, winning over visitor Faye Pinker and Mark Blair. Faye's husband Marc Pinker took Blue in an amazing 66:60, followed by Dan Stoll and Neeme Loorits.
One of the untold benefits of course-setting that I re-discovered was all the wildlife that can be seen when one is off-trail alone mornings and evenings. I saw numerous deer, turkeys, owls, and, I believe, a small mountain lion!
Thanks to the many helpers: Dan Greene and Dean French for assistance in course design, vetting & hanging controls, and starts & finishes; Dao Le for clue sheets and results; Jean & Ev Beuerman for vetting control numbers, running registration and giving my brother a hard time; Bob Cooley for printing maps before and at the meet; Jeff Lanam for beginners clinics; Olivia Graeve for running the Start-O; Thorsten Graeve for pre-running Blue and helping with starts; Van Boughner, Tapio Karras, Kelly Wells, Peter Graube & Hanu Haarma for running starts and finishes; and Gerry Goss, Kelly Wells, Mark Blair, George Minarik, Dennis Wildfogel and others for stepping in to calculate the results. Finally, a big THANKS goes to the control pickup crew who finished in the rain: Chuck Spalding, Harold & Penny DeMoss, and Dave Barr. One last recognition goes to some unknown horseback riders for following the detached boy down to safety.
