A beautiful day greeted all who attended the second meet at Joseph Grant County Park this year. The wildflowers were in bloom, the weather was sunny but cool, the little pigs were running around, and the poison oak was full and lush - all signs that spring was in the air.
We attempted to run the advanced courses through an area which hadn't been used in several years, with somewhat mixed results. On the positive side, there was some new terrain and some pretty views. On the negative side, the courses were long and steep, especially Brown and Green, there was a lot opportunity for trail running, some controls were technically less difficult than in the past, and a bunch of you found an awesome patch of poison oak near the end. Everyone seemed to have a good time, however.
All of the courses were long this time, which resulted in long finishing times. Panu Haaramo blazed around the 8.1 km Blue course in 84:32, finishing almost five minutes ahead of Magnus Wallenborg in second. The 7.2 km Red was won by Matthais Kohler in 85:48, less than a minute ahead of Kent Ohlund. Rolf Wuestenhagen was a ringer on the 6.3 km Green course, finishing in 64:52, more than 16 minutes ahead of George Minarik. Bob Cooley edged out Dennis Wildfogel on the 5.1 km Brown by 2 seconds, finishing in 70:28.
The Orange and Yellow courses were set a bit tough this time, which probably accounted for the larger-than-usual number of DNFs on these courses. Patsy White took the honors on Orange, finishing in 84:04, more than 5 minutes ahead of Stephanie MacLean. Chris Fernandez easily won Yellow with a time of 47:34, almost 22 minutes ahead of his closest competition. On White, the team of Byron Hann and Alex Whitfield raced around the 3.1 km course, finishing first in 34:29, 3 minutes ahead of second place.
As is true with most meets, we couldn't have pulled this off with out the help of many people. Thank you very much to Joan Roos, Gary Carpenter, Joe Scarborough, Syd Reader, and Mark Rice for running the advanced courses early; to Van Boughner and Jeff Lanam for covering the White, Yellow, Orange Starts, to Doug Stein for covering the remote starts; to Michael Young, Syd Reader and David Meredith for helping with the finish; to George Minarik for helping with results; to Ev and Jean Beuerman for registration and for pulling the Yellow course; to Kenandra Wood and Dean French for helping with registration; and to Chuck Spaulding for pulling the Orange course. A special thanks to Mark Blair, Jeff, and Syd for standing around looking dumb. These three were so successful at this task, that we were not called upon to do this even once.
On a last note, for those of you on the advanced courses who thought you saw a mountain lion before the first water stop, you weren't imagining it. Peter saw the lion being chased by a boar when he was pulling controls in that area.
